That is a huge gang in Fresno. It may be dangerous to convict possible gang members over something like this.
I strongly suspect, but don't know, that since these are gang thugs that the "life sentence" was probably due to a 3rd strike felony.

It’s like the case of the kid with a rosary “gang symbol” or calling Jewish circumcision “mayhem”.
You take down gangs for crimes, not symbols, free speech, parental discretion etc.
