Should This Be the Last Generation? (asks Peter Singer)
New York Times ^ | June 6, 2010 | Peter Singer

Posted on 06/07/2010 5:18:02 AM PDT by reaganaut1

...

Most thoughtful people are extremely concerned about climate change. Some stop eating meat, or flying abroad on vacation, in order to reduce their carbon footprint. But the people who will be most severely harmed by climate change have not yet been conceived. If there were to be no future generations, there would be much less for us to feel to guilty about.

So why don’t we make ourselves the Last Generation on Earth? If we would all agree to have ourselves sterilized then no sacrifices would be required — we could party our way into extinction!

Of course, it would be impossible to get agreement on universal sterilization, but just imagine that we could. Then is there anything wrong with this scenario? Even if we take a less pessimistic view of human existence than Benatar, we could still defend it, because it makes us better off — for one thing, we can get rid of all that guilt about what we are doing to future generations — and it doesn’t make anyone worse off, because there won’t be anyone else to be worse off.

Is a world with people in it better than one without? Put aside what we do to other species — that’s a different issue. Let’s assume that the choice is between a world like ours and one with no sentient beings in it at all. And assume, too — here we have to get fictitious, as philosophers often do — that if we choose to bring about the world with no sentient beings at all, everyone will agree to do that. No one’s rights will be violated — at least, not the rights of any existing people. Can non-existent people have a right to come into existence?

How in the Good Lords name can an animal consent? Buy this idiot a drink in some Zoophilia themed bar?

Liberalism really is a mental disorder.

I think this is what they are doing. Liberal Jews and Christian have far fewer children than religious Jews and Christians. Of course, this is why they want control of the universities: to persuade our children also to commit to the notion that this life is all there is, and that they ought to devote themselves to enjoying it as much as possible and leave no progeny. They flatter themselves that their legacy is a better world, when it is more likely to be universal slavery/barbarism. For nature will not be mocked, because it is God’s creation, not theirs.

Ping to LP

TH54, the term I had read somewhere was that “as long there was no harm to the animal”.

I have been watching this guy for awhile and knew he would mainstream with this administration.

My thoughts are that if this piece his not his opus to the world, then it should be. If he wants to lead this cause, then lead by example.

"Ordinarily, it would be in the low 70's. Our high temps for the next three weeks aren't supposed to go above the upper 80's. High temps this time of year would ordinarily be in the low to mid 90's."

Interesting data. The "keepers of temperature records" are already gearing up to pronounce 2010 "the hottest year on record". But we here in Washington state certainly are not having such a year. Now you say that in a completely different US location, a similar trend is happening.

I wonder "where" exactly these high temperatures are happening. I'll make a guess.....in remote locations where there are no people around to argue with the falseness of the AGW claims.

I am 100% behind the idea of liberals sterilizing themselves.

Imagine the great fun we could have tearing it all down. The only worry is what will the next sentient apex predator to come along in a few million years be like.

Nary a sunspot to be seen. We’re DEEP in a solar minimum that is showing no signs of letting up. That’s what these so-called “Climatologists” should be paying attention to.......

I agree totally. I am WAY more worried about "global cooling" than "global warming". If the astrophysicists are right, the trend should be unarguable in a couple of more years, and AGW will be "laughed off the stage".

What did Singer hope to achieve by writing this article?

I don’t think my dog would care for Dr. Singer’s suggestion.

Before following the thoughts and answering the Singer's questions, Freepers should note that this "Professor of Bioethic" has also written in support of BESTIALITY:

Heavy Petting, Peter Singer Nerve, 2001

I see only one question for readers to ask themselves:

How can the NYTimes & American academia, present us such a man as an ethical guide to the future of mankind?

Post#15 might explain why this mentally deranged moron hates God and humanity. His mind is trapped in darkness with no escape.

Imagining the world without God, humans, the beauty of nature and other miracles must be the ultimate hell on earth.

The torment of thinking - without a soul to guide him.

I'll go Singer one better. Since there is no G-d (according to him), there is no right and no wrong, so we can do whatever we like without universal sterilization. And since the world is inherently meaningless, what we do to other species, the climate, or the "earth mother" doesn't matter in the least, does it?
