Bob Dornan used to spout the “why worry about illegal immigration?” line that is still popular with country club Republicans of the Bush-Rove-McCain sort. The 1986 Amnesty, which Dornan supported, was going to provide him with the answer.
After the 1986 Amnesty his part of Orange County began a demographic shift as the one-time illegals settled in. One aspect of the amnesty was that they couldn’t vote for 10 years. For the 1996 Congressional election former GOP city council candidate Loretta Brixey re-registered as a Democrat under her maiden name of Loretta Sanchez. The new latino voters cast their ballots for Sanchez. The former rock solid conservative heart of Orange County became a reliable ethnic voting bloc for the Democrat left. It has also suffered many more waves of illegals who now demand amnesty. Bush attempted to give amnesty to them and Obama will continue the effort. When it comes to illegals Americans don’t count.
