A California Republican congressman on Friday would not apologize for a comment about immigrants he made in April in the context of Arizona's controversial new immigration law.
The law requires that state law enforcement officials ask for identification from people they suspect are in the country illegally if they are stopped for other reasons. Critics say that could lead to racial profiling of Latinos.
Rep. Brian Bilbray -- a supporter of the law -- was asked on MSNBC in late April how officers could identify illegal immigrants without using ethnic characteristics.
"They will look at the kind of dress they wear," he said. "There is different type of attire, there is different type of -- right down to the shoes, right down to the clothes. But mostly by behavior."
Immigrants-rights protesters gathered outside Bilbray's district office on Friday and demanded an apology, according to San Diego 6.
The congressman told the network he would not apologize:
Bilbray spoke exclusively with San Diego 6 and when asked to give an apology he said, "Apology for what?"
Bilbray says he's done nothing inappropriate, that his comments come from years of experience interacting with the Border Patrol. "Look, if you were raised along the border like I was -- if you had as much interaction with border patrol agents as I have -- you'd know that there's a whole lot of things that maybe the general public doesn't know about."
Now we just need about 300 more like this guy.

I've said it before - all it takes to strip the media and these groups of kooks of their power is to refuse to play by their rules.
Finally, a reporter who gets it right.
Do they have a valid drivers license? Do they speak english?
Anyone who comes in contact with the police needs to be positively ID. If they have questionable ID then they need to be taken in for further evaluation.
BUMP
Enemy flak is so heavy `Captain’ Bilbray could get out and walk on it.
He must be directly over the Democrats’ Schweinfurt ballbearing factory.
Here’s another clue: illegal aliens can’t speak English because they grew up in Mexico or central America.
But let’s not make the mistake of thinking Democrats will stipulate to the use of common sense. Any attempts to secure our borders will be called racist.
“A California Republican congressman on Friday would not apologize for a comment about immigrants”
Good for Bilbray!
Finally, someone not cowed into apologizing and flailing themselves.
what a sad state of affairs. profiling is done intuitively everyday by everyone. to believe otherwise is just to disbelieve science and to ignore human intelligence/nature. if we did not profile our surroundings, we would be brain dead. even blind people use their senses to profile.
again, how sad.....
BUMP

Just get pulled for any reason and try that no ID necessary crap. You go straight to jail. Illegal is not a race!
They might have also lived in this country for 15-20 years, speaking NO English because everyone caters to Spanish now, having Spanish on all products sold in U.S. stores, hiring teachers to teach in Spanish, using taxpayers' money, printing government documents, forcing doctors, hospitals, etc to hire "interpreters" including police, emergency workers of all kinds - including voting applications and ballots!!!
Time to cut out this "sh*@!
Let's see: No driver's license, expired registration, no insurance, no SS card, no debit/credit, no conceal permit, no birth certificate, no selective service registration, no voter registration, no prior hunting license, no union membership card, no vocational licenses, no library card. Wow, this guy is going to be POTUS someday! /Sarc
Seriously, I'm still looking to see where race enters into the picture here. A phony ID would make the citizenship even more obvious without asking.
Driving back to Phoenix from San Diego on Monday, we were profiled. In California, the two Border Patrol agents with Hispanic names, looked at both of our faces and waved us on through. Profiling is done every day. On the Arizona side of the state line, were again in a single file lane to go through a border checkpoint. This time they had a dog. He went down the driver’s side of the car and then they waved us through. It’s necessary. Nothing else needs to be said.
Uhhh...don't they mean illegal-alien-rights protesters?
I don't know if illegal aliens even have the right to remain silent, understand the charges against them, have the right to an attorney.
These people just lose all reality when they say that it’s “racist” to ask for ID.
If you are stopped for any moving violation, YOU ARE ASKED FOR YOUR ID! It has nothing whatsoever to do with whatever race the person might be.
The real problem comes when the driver cannot produce a driver’s license. At that point, the officer can ask them for some other kind of ID. Since legal immigrants are required by law to carry their “papers”, it’s not illegal for the officer to ask. If the person cannot produce “papers” proving he’s in the country legally, then and only then, can the person be arrested.
WHY IS IT SO DIFFICULT TO UNDERSTAND .. unless it’s NOT being UNDERSTOOD ON PURPOSE ..??
“Some critics say; immigration protestors; San Diego news channel 6”
I can understand his response: “Apologize for what?” and wonder if he also asked, “And to who?”
With the media it’s always a mysterious “some say” while the conservative being attacked is specifically identified.
So who’s offended? La Raza? Reuben Navarette? Illegal aliens who dress as he described and can’t speak English?
Looks like Francine Busby rolled the dice and lost. I think the mighty “undocumented immigrant” vote is an overblown chimera: They want citizenship rights but not duties like voting, paying taxes, investing in their community and paying their own way: they expect and receive education, medical care, three hots & a cot ...
Everything’s free in America right, at least, once you get your meal ticket? Even if you can’t recite the oath of citizenship in English, so you just murmer something. And it’s racist to think otherwise, right? At least that’s what the perpetually offended say.
Rant over.
>Do they have a valid drivers license? Do they speak english?
They can pretty much nail any illegal once they’re pulled over. Nice!
