To some Christian fundamentalists, the oil plume in the Gulf of Mexico heralds the apocalypse.

Fundamentalists take the Bible literally. If someone is looking at the oil and saying that fulfills the prophecy of the sea becoming blood, they are more like liberals who distort the text to prove their own point... not fundamentalists.
The Holy Bible is not a nose that you can twist to suit your face.

I know of
no conservative, evangelical...my self included, that points to the oil spill as a 'sign'. It was however,
an accident and to imply anything other is simply ridiculous and is intended to lump all Christians together and make it sound like we are kooks.
As far as signs, they are all over and The Book of Revelation is not in code. Years have been spent by some of the most sound and scriptural men (and I'm sure women as well) studying the bible and the symbols of the Book of Revelation are explained in OT and NT scripture.
And don't forget II Peter Chapter 2 describing the nature of man. It cannot be denied that we are approaching the final countdown. 'Accidents' (or sabotage) are not included. There are enough catastrophes that are natural- (and more will follow) happening and have been happening- that to state an 'accident' is a sign is pretty lame. But I forgot...the natural stuff is all global warming right?
