Historically speaking, civil wars don't generally have that effect. But I hope your's turns out to be an outlier.
I foresee it as a cleansing event, like a scraping off of a dead layer of skin from the body that is American humanity. A social Lufa, if you will. Except the lufa will be made of hot lead.

Before you get all excited, you might want to read up on the effects of civil wars. Ours was probably the least destructive to the society of all great civil wars, with by far the fewest atrocities.

Taiping Rebellion

Spanish Civil War

English Civil War

French Wars of Religion

Russian Civil War

Etc.

And you really shouldn’t take it for granted your side will win.
