Paul McCartney's cheap shot at President Bush
Washington Post ^ | 6/3/10 | Charles Lane

The ex-Beatle accepted the Library of Congress Gershwin Prize for Popular Song at a White House ceremony, with President Obama and the first lady in attendance.

Upon concluding his performance, McCartney aimed a bolt of sarcasm at Obama’s predecessor. “After the last eight years,” he quipped, “it’s great to have a president who knows what a library is.” The audience erupted in laughter.

McCartney's obnoxious crack, which was not only nasty, and totally inappropriate to the occasion, but also perfectly uninformed. Bush’s wife Laura is a librarian.

She and her husband made a mini-cause of supporting literacy and public libraries, both when he was governor of Texas and when he was president.

The Bush administration oversaw creation of a federal grant program to train a new generation of librarians. It’s called the Laura Bush 21st Century Librarian Program, and it has awarded $130 million to date.

During Bush’s presidency, federal funding for public libraries grew from $163.2 million per year to $212.2 million per year – a 30 percent increase.

In mocking the boorishness of a former U.S. president, Sir Paul, and those who roared at his remark, unfortunately demonstrated their own.

Sir Paul’s insult of GWB would be akin to an American being feted at Buckingham Palace and making a wisecrack about the “Queen Mum.”

I used to be a big McCartney fan. I still like his music, but it turns out he’s just en elitist thug.

Pity, that.

It surprises me that McCartney, of all people, is making wisecracks about someone’s intellect. Despite his accomplishments he’s always been viewed as a laughable lightweight by his more “serious” peers. I’d think he’d be sensitive to mocking others in the same way.

Perhaps Alzheimers is setting in. Someone needs to wheel this clown back into the nursing home.

Whenever the left gripes about how “bad” the 8 years of W were... I always ask, what was bad about it? People had jobs for one thing.

“After the last eight years,” he quipped, “it’s great to have a president who knows what a library is.”

After the last years, it's unfortunate to have a president who knows what a golf course is better than leading.

I absolutely will never buy anything about Beatles music or anything from artists that act like this.

Nobody ever said any of the Beatles were intelligent. They just made great music. Shut up and sing, Sir Paul!

As an aside, I’m really convinced this sort of thing is now starting to backlash on Zero. The general public has noticed his partying, his golf and basketball, etc. Barack and Michelle Antoinette are tumbling in popularity. I guess you shouldn’t claim ‘Il will not rest until this hole is plugged’ and then do everything except oversee the operation. Not surprising.

I don't mind making fun of the President (no matter who he is) and I know Bush had a great sense of humor.

But it's wrong when a foreigner does it.
