U.S. attorney announces arrest warrant for Joran van der Sloot, suspect in Natalee Holloway case (with video)

By The Birmingham News

June 03, 2010, 4:57PM

Federal prosecutors today announced a criminal complaint and arrest warrant for Joran van der Sloot, a suspect in the death of Mountain Brook teen Natalee Holloway.

Van der Sloot, a Dutchman, is charged with wire fraud and extortion for soliciting money on a promise that he would reveal the location of Natalee Holloway's body in Aruba and the circumstances of her death.

The U.S. Attorney's office and FBI said that on May 15 van der Sloot extorted $15,000 as a partial payment, wired from Birmingham to the Netherlands.

The total amount he was to be paid was $250,000. The information that van der Sloot has provided to that unnamed individual was false, federal authorities said.

The announcement comes the same day Van der Sloot was arrested in Chile in the murder of Stephany Flores, 21. Flores was killed in a Lima hotel Sunday, five years to the day after Holloway disappeared.

Peruvian police are seeking Van der Sloot in connection with the last May 30 killing of 21-year-old Stephany Flores at a Lima hotel. Van der Sloot was taken in a dark vehicle to a police office in downtown Santiago. He made no comment as he entered, walking calmly and without handcuffs as journalists shouted his name, the Associated Press reported.

Let's hope he doesn't get released like last time, to kill again.
