I am far from an expert in this, but one thing seems clear: the serial murderer is a sociopath who is incapable of feeling guilt. Because of this, he (and it's almost
always a he) does not care about the victim and does not need to assuage his guilt by killing himself.
Many spree killers "snap" and are not sociopaths. They feel the guilt and then off themselves.
