I’ve been in combat with a pistol and with a rifle. Give me a rifle any time.
As for home defense a shotgun is the only choise. It can kill an intruder dead and if you miss has a low probability of injuring or killing a neighbor with a round through the wall. Something that can’t be said of a .44 or even a .38 handgun.

Glaser Safety Slugs. The best round for home defense. It will not injure or kill a neighbor (or resident) via a round through the wall. Best of all, it sounds benign. If you shoot an intruder with your "Desert Eagle" and "Black Talon" bullets, it sounds like you were just dying to shoot somebody. If you fired your "GP-10" using "Glaser safety slugs". Nobody has ever survived getting 'Glassed".

The point of the guy in the article is that, even in a SHTF scenario, we will not descend into "Mad Max / Thunderdome" anarchy all at once. There will be a period of greatly increasing street crime. It will be a period where you will probably still be going to work and to the store, but in an environment where you may be ambushed by muggers.

In such an environment, you are not going to be going to work with a slung battle rifle. You would be going about your business with a concealed pistol, and maybe something heavier in your vehicle.
