I read somewhere here on FR during Bush Jr's run for President. Hispanic voters count for about 2% of all voter turnout. So why the pandering for their votes?

Is it because of the close election that the Supreme Court settled? I doubt that true patriotic Americans of Hispanic descent want illegals here either.
