LONDON - British police said the death toll from a shooting spree in northwest England earlier on Wednesday had risen to 12.
A taxi driver described as quiet but friendly went on a shooting spree across a picturesque rural area before apparently turning the gun on himself, police said.

Mr Wilson says he never had a problem with him and hes lived in the area for a long time. My son went to school with his son. Im not sure if he was married. He had a partner at one point but not for several years. Everybody in a 10-15 mile radius would know him, because everyone mixed with him. He was very sociable.
Hes the last person youd expect [to do this] - a very, very positive view, into quite a lot of things.
His son was into motorbikes and everything, into scuba diving. Most of his taxi business was in Whitehaven... so hes well known there too.
