Oscar-winning filmmaker James Cameron and another Canadian who built submersibles for the director's 1989 thriller "The Abyss" joined talks on Tuesday in Washington on innovative ways of capping the Gulf of Mexico oil spill... Cameron made two documentaries about the wreck of the ocean liner Titanic prior to filming his 1997 blockbuster Hollywood movie "Titanic."
He used a small fleet of specially designed remotely operated underwater vehicles and is regarded as an expert in the field.

So....you REALLY think a Hollywood producer/director..has any clue about fixing a leak...that the EXPERTS are having problems with?

James Cameron: deepsea submersible expert
GAD!!! Why not call Ballard of any of a number of US Navy personnel.
Oh, I forgot.
They never directed a film with off-planet smurfs.
He does have experience with large scale undersea operations, doesn’t he?
He filmed a MOVIE!~!
Was it filmed in a pool???
Was it filmed 5,000 feet beneath the surface???
Do you really think that ocean rift scene was REAL???
Uncle Joe and Commandante Fidel would not have done it any different.
CORRECTION: any different = any differently
The only way Cameron can plug something that big is with his ego.
I have no idea what his real experience is or if he could help at all. I just am not the kind of person that sits around waiting for some one person to do something. If there is anyone that could possibly help, I’m certainly willing to let them try. I believe in thinking outside of the box, cube, sphere or whatever container. Help/solutions sometimes comes from the least expected source.
I suppose it was inevitable that the Clueless WH Usurer would turn to the fantasy of Hollywood for fantasy engineering solutions.
Titanic (the real ship) is in water twice as deep as the BOP. The Cameron production company operates 2 of the 4 manned submersibles in the world that can go to that depth. Prior to the filming of the movie he was personally involved in researching the actual Titanic site, using the submersibles and camera ROV’s.
Whatever his politics, Cameron spent a lot of time and money on the Titanic project, and much of it was spent at the bottom of the ocean with the real Titanic.
I'm not sure how this would be helpful to the current situation, but it is not as misguided as Meryl Streep testifying before congress about Alar on apples.
I just don't think it's Cameron himself who has the expertise....
You can buy sub's, buy all kinds of equip. And hire those that can run it...doesn't make him an expert. Maybe just the $$ man...
Besides all that....what does Cameron know about capping a well? Probably as much as I do. ZERO.
You got me looking about...and if anyone should be consulted about deep sea diving...it would be this guy Dr Anatoly Sagalevitch.
FWIW-
Let’s get beyond Hollowood. Obama needs to get Mitch Rapp on board to help with terrorism. Or whatever we’re allowed to call it. And Jack Reacher. What a team that would make.
Kinda Ironic, Titanic....
I really doubt he would use moviemaking terms if he was asked for his advice.
