I can plug leak, says NY genius
NY Post ^ | June 2, 2010 | KIERAN CROWLEY and JEREMY OLSHAN

BP's engineers can't stop the gushing oil spill, but a young genius from Long Island says she found the solution in less time than it takes most people to finish a crossword puzzle.

Since the "top kill," "junk shot" and "top hat" techniques failed to end the environmental nightmare, Alia Sabur -- who started her engineering Ph.D. at age 14 -- is pushing for a more radical idea.

The Northport native, who started reading before she could walk and who at 18 broke a 300-year-old record to become the youngest-ever college professor, proposes surrounding a pipe with deflated automobile tires, inserting it into the leaking riser, and then inflating the wheels to form a seal.

She calls the plan the "seabed retread."

"It's not completely out there, considering that tires are used for everything and they're expected to withstand a lot," Sabur, 21, told The Post.

From the drilling reports I have seen, they had problems from the get go. I have 30 years in oilfield wireline experience and still can't wrap my mind around some of the mistakes they made. Some people with BP need to go to jail and some people in the government's MM division also need to go to jail.

Its cheaper to pay off the inspector than to fix the problem. age old problem

Our best Seawolf class submarine has a crush depth of 2400 feet. The best Soviet K-278 Komsomolets submarine (Titanium hull) has a crush depth of 4265 feet.

The Deepwater Horizon is at 5000 feet.

How are tires going to hold air at 5000 feet when the best military submarine crushes at 4265 feet?

What am I missing?

Has no idea of the pressures involved? The girl started her her engineering doctorate at 14; when did you start yours?

Really - if the first cap failed because frozen gas sealed it, why not use the same freezing mechanism to freeze the pipe?

Why does everyone think the oil is trickling out like a bubbling stream?

This would be kinda like trying to stuff beans into the end of a hose that was turned fully on.......

lol, yeah, or pump "Great Stuff" down into the hole.

After 911, when the pentagon was taking suggestions for exotic weapons, I sent them a proposal for great stuff bombs to use with the Afghan caves. That would be a really nasty way to get sealed into a cave. That stuff finds every crack and crevasse.

Most people I know take 3 years, maybe 4 or 5 to get their doctorate. She’s at year 7, and still doesn’t have it.

Doesn’t sound very smart to me...

She should have done a little more research before putting her reputation on the line.

I suspect that her college was trying to get some PR by admitting such a young person.

Why all of the dithering????

All they have to do is drop one of our "Daisy Cutter" bunker busting type of bombs on top of the problem. It will collapse the pipe and seal the well. Blasting has sure killed a lot of water wells in coal territory when used in the mines.

What are they afraid of.....that they may kill a few fish? That's going to happen anyhow.

The sub crush depth example fails to consider that those subs carry people. Therefore, you cannot equalize, or come close to equalizing the pressure inside, to counteract the pressure outside.

Were not talking about anything that needs to keep a crew alive here.
