I've actually been to Benton Harbor in the middle of the day. It looked like a ghost town boarded up, and that was before the riots. It reminded me of a smaller verion of some of the somewhat nearby south Chicago burbs like Harvey.
The sad thing is that, there should be no reason for a city on a crown jewel like Lake Michigan to have gotten in that bad of shape. Muskegon Heights is also bad, but that's not on the lake.
