I’m from Mobile so I know the area very well. As I understand it Tegerdine is a Mormon and Gene Taylor has played the conservative Catholic card very well for many years.
I don’t think Tegerdine can beat Taylor. Catholic Republicans in Pascagoula, Biloxi and elsewhere will vote for Taylor who is one of them before they vote for Tegerdine the Mormon who’s not even a native of Mississippi. In the Baptist areas north of the coast, Tegerdine’s issue probably becomes even more of an issue because of what Baptists believe about Mormons.
Honestly, with Tegerdine as the nominee I can’t see him getting more than party line vote. Palazzo won’t have a cakewalk with Taylor either but he is Catholic like Taylor so religion ceases to be an issue (though I do think only a Catholic can defeat Taylor) and he actually is Mississippi so Gene wouldn’t be able to play the good ole’ boy vs outsider card that would come easy in a race vs Tegerdine.
To beat Taylor you had to nullify the advantages that Catholicism and Katrina give him. Tegerdine will never be able to do that. Palazzo would.

Good. Taylor is a Pelosi lapdog.

Ok, let me rephrase what I said because I made it sound like Palazzo would beat Taylor. Never said that. I said that he could and could at least make it a real race. That is possible.
With enough money and some missteps from Taylor a narrow victory for Palazzo is possible. What I was trying to communicate was that a win for Tegerdine is impossible, probably anywhere for Mississippi but especially South Mississippi against Taylor.
To: AzaleaCity5691
After looking at both of their "Issue Position" Statements
I think that Joe Tegerdine is more thought out than Palazzo.
I understand the "politics" of what you're suggesting.
But this is a Primary, and not the General Election.
I want the best person for the job, and I think that Joe Tegerdine is a more conservative person.
But again, I'm gathering facts, and I haven't made up my mind, yet.

I know where U.S. Congress Candidates serve; A** HOLE.
This is what you said in your post:
"I just learned about my hometown elections tomorrow."
"Hometown" is not a NATIONAL office. Try being a little more clear in your Post before you post a smart a** reply.

Taylor has made enough missteps already. I’d rather have him than a moonbat, but I’d rather have a conservative than either.

Tegerdine is the favorite of the Tea Party folks. I watched a debate between them and Tegerdine was the clear winner. Don’t know whether either can beat the democrat but i certainly hope so. Palazzo is a johnny-come-lately and i don’t think he would have even entered had he not seen how strong the grass roots against Taylor was by watching Tegerdine. Tegerdine has been working his butt off and has only received small donations totaling about 60K and Palazzo raised almost 3 times as much with hardly any effort and in less than half the time. i wonder where his money came from?

June 22, 2010 is the Primary Runoff date. Here is a projection from
Scott Elliott at: thebloggingcaesar@yahoo.com.
Thursday, March 4, 2010 Mississippi preview
Since there is no Senate or gubernatorial race on tap in Mississippi this year, my preview will be short.
Although this Deep South state is decidedly Republican, Democrats hold a 3 to 1 advantage in the state's House delegation.
In a state won by John McCain by 13 points in 2008 and by every GOP nominee since Jimmy Carter's 1976 victory,
only first-termer Gregg Harper in district 3 carries an 'R' after his name.
That may change come November, however.
House District 1: Democrat Travis Childers won a special election in April, 2008 to replace Republican Roger Wicker who had been appointed to the Senate seat of outgoing Senator Trent Lott. His victory was a shock to the GOP and a tell-tale sign that the blue wave of 2006 was still packing a punch. Later that year, he won a full term with an easy win in the November elections. Interestingly, until Wicker moved to the Senate, this seat had been held by just two people since 1941. Wicker won an open seat election in 1994. That open seat was courtesy of Democrat Jamie Whitten's retirement and marked the first time in 54 years that Whitten's name was not on the ballot.
That's right; Mr. Whitten served a remarkable 27 terms. He was the longest serving representative in U.S. history at the time.
Fast-forward to 2010, and you'll find the chances of sitting Representative Childers duplicating Whitten's feat pretty doubtful.
With a Republican wind blowing through this Republican-leaning district, Election Projection starts off this race as a Weak GOP Gain.
Other House Races
Projected winner listed first District 2: Bennie Thompson (D)-inc vs. ??? (R)
District 3: Gregg Harper (R)-inc vs. ??? (D)
District 4: Gene Taylor (D)-inc vs. ??? (R)
Here's some more news.

Childers will ultimately come down to who wins the primary and courthouse politics in NE Mississippi.
If it’s that woman from Fox News he will win though. Once again, just as South Mississippi is not going to send a Mormon to Congress over Gene Taylor the northeastern corner of the state is not going to send a black female Fox anchor over “good ole country boy” Travis Childers.
It’s why Republican voters in that part of the state need to choose Nunnelee.
To: fatrat
The Tea Party, strong as it may be, is not going to get a Yankee Mormon elected over Taylor.
There is not a social issue that Tegerdine can attack Taylor on, not one. Taylor is more socially conservative than most Republicans in Congress. Where he is liberal is on economic issues and some fiscal ones. Remember he voted Aye on all four articles of impeachment on Clinton.
Not only will Tegerdine not have any real issue other than “being a vote for Pelosi” to attack Taylor on Taylor will have demographics and culture on his side. All Taylor has to do is remind Baptists in the northern part of the district that Mormons believe they become God of their own planet and all he has to do with the Catholics on the coast that he is one of them.
Palazzo’s money I can tell you is coming from the GOP establishment down there. I bet you Palazzo had to be talked into it and is probably only running to stop Tegerdine from getting the nomination.
However, they’re not doing that because the GOP establishment down there fears Tegerdine’s conservatism or the tea party. They’re doing it because they know that having Tegerdine as nominee not only hands Taylor another term easily but would allow him to good ole boy himself up to the point that he’d be a viable candidate for statewide office in 2010.
I know that Tegerdine probably has supporters here but people need to understand this one thing: The idea that South Mississippi is going to elect a Yankee Mormon to Congress is fantasy, pure fantasy and if there is anyone who is hoping for a Tegerdine primary victory tommorow it is Taylor.

Q&A with candidates Palazzo and Tegerdine
By David Owens, newseditor@laurelleadercall.com
Laurel Leader-Call
LAUREL On paper, the two Republican candidates for the 4th Congressional district seat State Rep. Steven Palazzo (R-Biloxi) and Joe Tegerdine look similar.
Both are south Mississippi businessmen.
Both have voiced strong concerns about the current state of the federal government.
Both believe they are the right choice to unseat U.S. Rep. Gene Taylor (D-Miss.), who has held the office for the past 20 years.
But, who is the right choice for voters when they go to the polls in Tuesdays Primary Election?
Palazzo, a lifelong Mississippian and graduate of the University of Southern Mississippi, has not met Tegerdine, an Oregon native who relocated to the state in 2007, in any kind of public debate.
The Laurel Leader-Call sent a questionnaire to both camps to inquire about their views on a number of hot button issues such as abortion, gay marriage and the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.
The questions were culled from a lengthier questionnaire put together by Get Out Of Our House (GOOH), a non-partisan plan to evict the career politicians from the U.S. House of Representatives.
Will you vote for or against amending the Constitution to make abortion illegal at all times, from the moment of conception, except under specific circumstances such as rape, severe birth defects, incest, or threats to the mothers life?
This would include making the Pill and the newer morning-after pill illegal.
Palazzo: I am pro-life and I will vote to protect the life of the unborn.
Joe Tegerdine: I will vote for such an amendment.
Will you vote for or against term limits of four years (two terms) or less for seats in the U.S. House of Representatives?
Palazzo: I will vote for term limits for all members of Congress and the U.S. Senate,
so long as term limits are universally imposed on and it does not negatively impact Mississippi.
Joe Tegerdine: I will vote for 4 terms (8 years). Four years is too short of a time.
Will you vote for or against defining marriage as the union between any two people (of legal age)?
Palazzo: I will vote against any type of legislation that defines marriage as the union between any two people (of legal age).
Marriage is only between a man and a woman.
Joe Tegerdine: I will vote for defining marriage as the union of one man and one woman.
Will you vote for or against life in prison or the death penalty, on the first offense, for rapists and child molesters?
In cases of murder?
Palazzo: I support the death penalty as a deterrent to heinous crimes.
We must protect the weak and the young from the evils in society.
Joe Tegerdine: Death penalty for murder.
Life in prison or death penalty for repeat offenders
or first time offenders where their crime was so deplorable (multiple victims) that life in prison or death penalty is merited.
Will you vote for or against a National Health Care System, funded with tax dollars and controlled by the federal government, that provides health care to every American citizen?
Palazzo: I will vote against legislation that turns our healthcare system into a national socialized system.
We do need reform, but that reform must come in common sense free market solutions.
Joe Tegerdine: I will vote against.
Will you vote for or against reducing total expenditures on government programs by at least 5 percent each year you are in office?
Palazzo: I will absolutely vote for cutting federal spending by at least 5 percent each year I am in office.
There are several federal bureaucracies that need to be cut by much more than 5 percent.
As a CPA, I know how to trim fat and wasteful spending.
Joe Tegerdine: Yes, I will vote for reducing expenditures.
Will you vote for or against a balanced budget amendment,
with exceptions only for periods of declared war, a declining annual GDP, or in the event of a major natural disaster?
Palazzo: I will vote for a balanced budget amendment when I am in Congress.
Balancing the budget only strengthens our national and state economy.
This strength will create more jobs for South Mississippians and consumer confidence will skyrocket.
Joe Tegerdine: I will vote for a balanced budget amendment that would have provisions to adjust for the three areas you mention,
but do not want an amendment that gives our government a profit motive to engage in war.
Will you vote for or against a Guest Worker Program that allows non-U.S. citizens to work in the United States?
Palazzo: Right now we must create more jobs at home and protect existing jobs from non-U.S. citizens.
Joe Tegerdine: I will vote against such program as long as U.S. unemployment is higher than 5 to 6 percent.
This would not give these workers any advantage or opportunity to become a citizen outside of the normal process.
Will you vote for or against establishing English as the national language,
and requiring its exclusive use in all public institutions and on all public material?
Palazzo: While in Congress, I will vote for establishing English as the national language.
English is freedom.
If people wish to immigrate here legally, they must assimilate to our culture.
Speaking English is that first step. My ancestors did it, and Im proud to be an American.
Joe Tegerdine: I will vote for English as the national language.
Will you vote for or against allowing people who entered the country illegally to receive Social Security or other government benefits?
Palazzo: Those who come to this country illegally should not benefit from our entitlement programs or government benefits.
They are not American citizens, so I will vote against allowing illegal immigrants those benefits.
Joe Tegerdine: No benefits for illegals.
Will you vote for or against permitting religious activities on local, state, and federal property
(such as schools, libraries, and municipal buildings), at the discretion of the members of each site?
Palazzo: I will vote for permitting religious activities on local, state and federal property.
I believe the First Amendment grants us this basic right.
It is unfortunate that we have to send our children to costly private schools
in order to learn about our God, which this great country was founded upon.
Joe Tegerdine: I would support permitting religious activities in public places
Will you vote for or against limiting the amount of foreign aid provided to any one country, in any year, to a maximum of 10,000 times the median income ($460 million),
and to only allow a country to receive funds for a maximum of two years in any five year period,
excepting those nations in a declared war with a foreign enemy or a genocidal situation?
Palazzo: I will vote for this. We must put our country and our state first.
Joe Tegerdine: I would vote against all forms of foreign aid.
It is unconstitutional.
Will you vote for or against supporting the right of every citizen to carry a concealed weapon,
assuming they can demonstrate basic firearm competence,
but excluding those who have been convicted of a felony or deemed to be mentally incompetent?
Palazzo: The 2nd amendment to our U.S. Constitution clearly states that we have the right to keep and bear arms.
In Congress, I will make sure that gun owners, myself included get to keep their guns.
I will vote for every citizen to carry a concealed weapon, assuming they can demonstrate basic firearm competence,
while excluding those who have been convicted of a felony or deemed to be mentally incompetent.
If we outlaw guns, only outlaws will have guns.
Joe Tegerdine: I would vote for the right to carry.
As long as the federal government remains involved in the education system, will you vote for or against a law
that requires the removal of the bottom 3 percent of teachers in each school district each year you are in office (maximum of 4 years)?
Palazzo: I will vote to remove federal government from education
and transfer control of education to the states, the school boards, local leaders and parents.
Joe Tegerdine: How would competency be measured?
I would be supportive of cuts if the measures to do so are appropriate.
Will you vote for or against amending the Constitution
to make an abortion legal for only the first three months after conception
excluding cases of rape, incest or serious risk to the mothers life? At all times?
Palazzo: Yes. I am Pro-life and I will vote to protect the life of the unborn.
Joe Tegerdine: I will support any laws that restrain and prohibit abortion.
Will you vote for or against increasing income taxes, excepting only during a period of declared war?
Palazzo: I will vote against increasing income taxes.
Once income taxes are reduced, people can buy more products.
This strengthens our economy,
and history has shown that when taxes are reduced overall the federal government has more revenue.
Joe Tegerdine: I will vote to replace the income tax code with the FairTax.
Will you vote for or against limiting deployment to 10,000 troops, for a maximum of three years,
in any country which we are not at war with and have not been for any of the last 10?
Palazzo: This depends on whether it is our nations best interest
and if it is to protect American sovereignty and/or American lives.
Joe Tegerdine: We should not have troops in any country if it does not serve an American purpose.
I would support bringing troops home after three years if they are not supporting a combat mission or terrorist offensive.
Will you vote for or against using our military to control our borders and prevent illegal immigration?
Palazzo: I support increasing our national security.
I will vote for using our military to protect our borders.
Joe Tegerdine: Yes, I would support using our military to enforce our border security.
Will you vote for or against supporting states rights over federal rights
at least 90 percent of the time?
Palazzo: I will vote for states rights over federal rights more than 90 percent of the time.
We need less federal government in our lives.
Joe Tegerdine: I will vote for states rights under the 10th Amendment 100 percent of the time.
Will you vote for or against a law
that requires each representative to certify he/she has personally read the final version of a bill, in its entirety,
prior to being allowed to vote for the bill?
Palazzo: I will vote for a law that requires each representative to certify they have personally read the final version of a bill, in its entirety, prior to being allowed to vote for the bill.
How can we properly enact laws and govern if we arent reading the bills we put into law?
Business as usual will stop with me.
Legislating cannot be done this way.
Joe Tegerdine: Yes, I would support this type of law.
I think I still like
Joe Tegerdine best.

No, the debate i saw was in Picayune about 6 weeks ago and was not reported on except briefly in the Picayune item. Palazzo has been unable to “fit another debate into his schedule” since that one. I think Pearl River County will vote for Tegerdine.
