LOD Death...
THE OFFICER DOWN MEMORIAL PAGE ^

Posted on 05/29/2010 11:26:54 PM PDT by EAGLE7

Officer Travis P. Murphy was shot and killed when he confronted a suspect who had fled the scene of a shots fired call earlier in the night.

Officers in a neighboring precinct responded to a report of shots fired. When they arrived, the perpetrator had fled, but they transmitted a description of the suspect's vehicle over their department radio. Several minutes later, dispatchers received reports that a man was seen attempting to hide a vehicle under a tarp at a vacant home. Officer Murphy, along with several officers, responded to the scene and started searching for the man on foot.

“”A Tucson man with previous theft and weapons convictions was charged Thursday with first-degree murder and weapons violations in the fatal shooting of a Phoenix police officer.

Danny Ledezma Martinez, 30, was also charged with burglary and fleeing from a police vehicle, Maricopa County Attorney Rick Romley said.

Prosecutors will decide whether to pursue the death penalty after reviewing the circumstances surrounding the slaying of Officer Travis Murphy on Wednesday.

Records show Martinez previously served more than four years of a five-year sentence for attempted sexual assault before being released in 2003.

He also spent more than three years in an Arizona prison on felony weapons misconduct charges in the Tucson area before being released in April 2009.””
