The $65,535 question is "how?" ... the oil is blasting from deep down the Earth and is pushing everything out. You shove a hammer (1 sq. inch) into the well and it will be pushed out with 13,000 pounds of force. And that is for each and every square inch of the tool that you introduce into the well.

Besides, there is no access to the bore. If they remove the failed BOP then the flow of oil will increase tenfold, and nobody knows if that would help in fixing the problem. Some people speculate that BP is just doing public performances with long shots, to pass time and appease the public until the two relief wells are completed.

What is the temo of the oil coming out?

180°F was quoted. It's colder than usual, they say.
