Russians show how to nuke shut a runaway natural gas well. Show this to the nuclear engineers you know and please tell me what they think. As far as ding the same in this case
If we go down this road, the nuke guys are very likely not the gating opinion here - the geologists studying the strata on top of the oil deposit will be the guys who have a far bigger say in the use of any nuke. The nuke guys can, given a little time and a bunch of money, make a device that meets the parameters. We know how to do that [relatively] easily. We’ve made them in the past, we can make them now. It’s just engineering. The science is done.
The geologists have to be “pretty darn sure” that the strata on top of this oil/gas deposit aren’t going to fracture after a nuke goes off on top of it to give a go-ahead. Then they have to give opinions on the possibility of nuke products leaking to the surface, etc. That’s brand-new science. No one has popped off a big bang like this on top of an oil deposit with that much pressure on top of it. This would be one huge science experiment for the geology community.
The chamber that forms as a result of underground nuke shots that I mentioned before is shown in that film very briefly at about 3:27 to 3:31 as I view it. The resulting crater you can see at about 3:40 to 3:41 or so. The dozer at the end of the film is filling this crater in.
