With all due respect: it's not a good thing. If things get nasty our troop's CinC will let them all die while he holds meetings and conferences (in between rounds of golf).
The US armed forces in Korea have always been hostages. There are only about 20,000 — a joke against 1,000,000+ North Koreans. The reason US troops are there to force the US to intervene with real numbers in order to protect them if the North Koreans ever invade. They are political insurance for the South Koreans. But the 20,000? They’re cannon fodder and every President knows it.
