OLYMPIA Sarah Harris goes through the motions of her day trying hard not to think about what life was like a year ago or what it would be like now if not for "the incident."
She feels guilty leaving the house, even if only for a couple of hours to visit her mom or sister, to run errands, or go grocery shopping. She still cries every night.
Her husband, the first boy she kissed and the only man she's ever loved, suffered a catastrophic brain injury when his head slammed into a concrete wall after a brief footchase with two King County sheriff's deputies on Mother's Day 2009. He's now confined to bed, unable to talk, walk or do anything for himself.
Christopher Sean Harris spent six weeks at Harborview Medical Center, where his family was encouraged to remove him from life support because doctors didn't think he'd ever come out of a coma. But he did, and was transferred to an Edmonds nursing home in June.
Sarah Harris, who worked as a manager for Nordstrom and dreamed of becoming a buyer for the department store, gave up her job to care for her husband.
"I loved my job, and I miss it all the time," she said. "But I knew there was no way I could go back to work and leave him alone in a nursing home all day. There was no decision to even make."

Everyone is innocent until proven guilty. According to your logic, cops cannot apprehend ANYONE suspected of a crime! Ergo, unless the cop sees a crime committed, the criminal has no worry!
no, but the man used no force against them, thus they should remain restrained themselves. I work with cops, they are in control of their own behavior, this cop was not. people panic and run for all kinds of reasons. does not mean they should die as a result. this man might as well have, he has no life at all now. and it was the result of the cop’s actions.
Usually because they don't want to be caught! And why do they not want to be caught? Because they are criminals!
so ANYONE who runs is a criminal? they had their chance to prove it and they couldn’t. they pushed around a man they could NOT prove was involved. so running did NOT make him guilty of anything. facts are funny things.
Hey Cop Bashers, how about giving Cops the benefit of the doubt for a change instead of pre judging them?
It's been a whole FREAKING YEAR since this incident, the guy is still bed ridden and probably will be for life, and the cop got a complete pass from a sham internal investigation that found he "followed procedure."
Just how long do you expect people to give him the "benefit of the doubt" for? Oh wait. For life because "benefit of the doubt" really = we should just not ask any questions at all.
As to the frequency of cop bashing here, have you ever considered the possibility that some cops just might deserve it? Or that your automatic defense of EVERY cop, for the "benefit of the doubt" of course whether they deserve that doubt or not, only makes it harder to distinguish the good cops from the bad cops and appropriately punish the bad cops where they exist, thereby also giving good cops a bad name?
The complaint is always the same: they walk in thinking they're all John Wayne and thinking that they're super-dooper SWAT trained "experts" who know how to do anything and everything, then they screw something up on the very first patrol and put the real soldiers lives in danger.
Saying only cops understand and can criticize the tactics of other cops is the intellectual equivalent of saying only black people understand and can criticize Barack Obama. And I have little patience for either.
Not exactly an 'innocent bystander'.
If he is not "innocent" then he must be guilty of something. What crime, then, did he commit to justify bashing his head into a wall and nearly killing him?
There is one crime visible in that video. It's called felony assault, and possibly attempted homicide.
so, it will be only fitting someday when you run from something to get mistreated by the cops. good for you. I will not give away my civil rights so easily.
Nice editing.
Hmmm, they are living at Summit Lake, a gorgeous place (I live west of there by about 40 miles) and drive past it two or three times a month. I’ll keep these people in my prayers.
You always run from the cops?
A horrible tragic accident all the way around.
“The same control freak would not have done that to someone at his own weight and bulk and level of preparation.”
You are right, he would have tased the victim instead.
“Typical boot-licker mentality.”
You are an insulting jackass.
E. Pluribus Unum does not believe in undercover policework.
As the video shows, the cops ceased using force once the subject was down and no longer presented a threat.
Bullsh*t. The kid never posed a "threat" in the first place, though he most definitely was threatened by the cop that smashed him into an inch of his own life.
To put it another, and necessarily blunt, way, it would NOT have been entirely unjustified in this situation had the kid used deadly force of his own in self defense against the thug who tackled him, knowing what was going to happen to him otherwise.
You're clearly one of those "Officer Safety Uber Alles" types, but it's a legitimate question to ask: why is this kid's life worth less than the cop who tackled him? And why should it be justified to smash him within an inch of his life to "protect" that cop from a threat that isn't real, but rather is only perceived on a hunch that later turned out to be completely and 100% mistaken?
The only valid moral answer is it isn't, and it shouldn't be.
I await you getting yourself caught up in something. Let us now how it goes. I am off to a picnic....so I will leave you to make any comments you want.
You are an ignorant fool.
