OLYMPIA Sarah Harris goes through the motions of her day trying hard not to think about what life was like a year ago or what it would be like now if not for "the incident."
She feels guilty leaving the house, even if only for a couple of hours to visit her mom or sister, to run errands, or go grocery shopping. She still cries every night.
Her husband, the first boy she kissed and the only man she's ever loved, suffered a catastrophic brain injury when his head slammed into a concrete wall after a brief footchase with two King County sheriff's deputies on Mother's Day 2009. He's now confined to bed, unable to talk, walk or do anything for himself.
Christopher Sean Harris spent six weeks at Harborview Medical Center, where his family was encouraged to remove him from life support because doctors didn't think he'd ever come out of a coma. But he did, and was transferred to an Edmonds nursing home in June.
Sarah Harris, who worked as a manager for Nordstrom and dreamed of becoming a buyer for the department store, gave up her job to care for her husband.
"I loved my job, and I miss it all the time," she said. "But I knew there was no way I could go back to work and leave him alone in a nursing home all day. There was no decision to even make."

I saw the video. You are a liar. Doom on you and your kind.
I saw the video also. EAGLE7 is not a liar. The video shows the kid slowing down and then the cop coming in at a run. The cop had been chasing him for 2 1/2 blocks.
Why would this kid pay a buddy $60 to drive him from Olympia to a dark alley in Seattle in the middle of the night? Can we say d.r.u.g.s?
Then the man was not running away. The video does not show the man running away. The video shows the man being hit at high speed and having his head jammed into the concrete wall at high speed.
" The cop had been chasing him for 2 1/2 blocks. " The cop hit him with deadly force from the front and side, not from behind.
"Why would this kid pay a buddy $60 to drive him from Olympia to a dark alley in Seattle in the middle of the night? Can we say d.r.u.g.s?"
Irrelevant!
Damn. No way that that level of force was required.
The cop was taking the angle on the running suspect. The suspect slowed, turned to face the cop.
The man was not running.
That was no “tackle” Maybe if the cop did tackle him, the man wouldn’t be in the situation he is in now.
Not only that, there was no reason to shove or “tackle” him. The man was just standing there
OK. The man had been running but was seen in the video as he was slowing down from a run.
I am a former police officer so here is my take.
In every jurisdiction I know of, the police are 100% responsible for the well being of any and all suspects once they are in custody. Custody begins the second a person can not leave of his own free will. These cops were wrong, and city will pay, guaranteed. (Reasonable Use of force on an unarmed man does not include a full body tackle. No department allows for it. But “in the moment” it may be allowed, once and after that the officer is on a short leash) Does it amount to a felony assault, I believe it does, but nearly impossible to prosecute criminally, so it is left to the civil courts.
The city will settle, they would be crazy not too.
How is that relevant to the use of excessive force shown in the video?

It helps explain why he was in a dark alley when the 2 1/2 block chase began and why he ran from the cops.

I watched the video and read the story. If that full on body slam into a wall is what now constitutes acceptable police tactics in this country, then I am living in the wrong POLICE STATE.
Also, you don’t reach into your pocket and pull something out when a cop is chasing you. If I were the cop, I would immediately think that it might be a gun and I would have to stop this guy right now!
When you get caught with dope you have to do a little explaining ...
First of all, what is your definition of a "FELON"?
To the now brain damaged civilian, he was some innocent guy being chased by two big guys dressed in black, one of whom slammed him into a wall after he had stopped to face them with his hands shown. At that point pursuit should have terminated and he should have been apprehended then questioned........It has not been substantiated that the cops identified themselves as police officer, the story reports conflicting reports.
What has been determined is
"Investigators later determined that Harris wasn't involved in the brawl, or a later fight at the convenience store".
So we had two cops in hot pursuit of a suspect in a "bloody brawl" ....They may have been found innocent of their actions via internal investigation but I can guarandamntee you that they are going to go down following the civil lawsuit that is now starting. And that city is going to pay dearly........
Then you saw the guy reach into his pocket. In the heat of the chase, the cop had to protect himself in case it was a gun. You did see the guy throw the dope away?
It is obvious that the cop was a bully that went too far.
If you can't control your emotions or have an ounce of common sense, then you shouldn't be a cop.
To pick up some fresh fishing bait for fishing the next day........prove me wrong.
Anyone has every reason to be anywhere they want any time of the day.......
There's no law against it is there?
Of course being caught with drugs in your pocket in a dark alley in Seattle in the middle of the night is not going to go over too well with the little wife when you call from jail.
What if it had been gun the guy pulled out of his pocket instead of the drugs? One moment of hesitation from the cop and this would be a thread about a dead cop.
