White House admits pushing Sestak to drop Senate bid

WASHINGTON (Reuters) – The White House tried to get Representative Joe Sestak to drop his Senate primary bid in Pennsylvania in exchange for an unpaid administration job, according to an internal report released on Friday that concluded the offer was legal.

President Barack Obama's chief of staff Rahm Emanuel enlisted former President Bill Clinton as a go-between with Sestak to discuss an unpaid job on a presidential advisory board so he could stay in the House of Representatives and avoid a divisive Democratic primary race for the Senate seat.

"I said no," Sestak said in a statement after the White House released its report. "The former president said he knew I'd say that and the conversation moved on to other subjects."

Sestak said publicly earlier this year the White House offer was conditioned on him dropping his primary challenge to Pennsylvania Senator Arlen Specter, who had switched from the Republican Party to the Democrats.

That switch helped give the Democrats a 60-seat majority in the Senate, enabling them to overcome Republican procedural roadblocks. They lost the 60-seat majority in January when Republican Scott Brown was elected in Massachusetts to fill a seat left vacant by the death of Democrat Edward Kennedy.

Disclosure of the offer outraged Republicans who demanded an independent investigation into whether the White House broke laws barring the offer of jobs in exchange for favors.

I don’t believe for an instant that the offer was for an “unpaid advisory position.” This is a whitewash cover-up to prevent White House officials from being charged with a felony. If the House had any cajones at all, they would investigate. I’m not holding my breath, however.

In the specific instance, probably not but the long term plan is to keep picking away at der Leader. Pick Pick Pick. The more it happens, the closer he gets to really blowing. In fact, now with two things, at least, at the forefront, we can ping pong him. One day the oil disaster and his lack of response, the next day the Sestak thing.

Unpaid. Well, if I knew that, I wouldn’t have been so worked up about it. This is a non-issue, whew.

...of course getting a non-paid job is not particularly difficult in this country. My wife volunteers and has never yet been turned down. Funny how Seasteak needed the White House to get him one. Hmmm.

I agree with you. The whole story is fabricated. Obama JUST HAPPENED to have lunch with Clinton yesterday? Right. They’re all a bunch of liars and crooks.
