Elizabeth Birnbaum's departure was first reported as a "firing." Later, a "resignation." When asked for clarity, President Obama told the press corps today he had no idea.
"Did she resign," asked CBS White House Correspondent Chip Reid. "Was she fired? Was she forced out? And if so, why?"
"I found out about her resignation today," the president answered, "so I don't know the circumstances in which this occurred."
An incredulous press corps followed up.
"How is it that you didn't know about Ms. Birnbaum's resignation/firing before?" asked another reporter.
Mr. Obama: "Well, you're assuming it was a firing. If it was a resignation, then she would have submitted a letter to Mr. Salazar this morning at a time when I had a whole bunch of other stuff going on... Come on, I don't know. I'm telling you I found out about it this morning. So I don't yet know the circumstances, and Ken Salazar has been in testimony on the Hill."

Slick Willie and Hillary used to find out about what was going on in their administration by hearing it on the news too!
First, people don't usually quit right in the middle of a disaster because they are busy trying to do their job. So, if she did resign, she obviously had a serious beef with the way the Obama administration was handling the spill response.
I hope an enterprising Fox reporter gets an interview ASAP.
“First, people don’t usually quit right in the middle of a disaster because they are busy trying to do their job.”
Exactly. This casts serious doubt on your speculation that she did resign. Another truism that you left out is that many firings are disguised as resignations “to spend more time with the family” etc. Thus, even if a letter of resignation is released, that in no way proves she wasn’t fired.
That said, if she were fired, it clearly didn’t come from the WH. Obama looked like an idiot acknowledging that he himself didn’t even know how her position became vacant. If he’d fired her, he surely would have taken credit for this as part of the absurd cover story that he’s on top of the oil spill situation.

Everything he says is a lie, including that he has no idea.
You may be onto something, except I think it's a lot bigger than the spill response. Of all the major oil companies, BP had by far the worst safety and regulatory record, having been convicted of two genuinely serious environmental felonies, one misdemeanor, and still being on probation for one of the felonies and the misdemeanor. In addition, throughout the years of the Bush administration, it was repeatedly cited for various lesser violations. Then it and its people give major campaign contributions to Obama's 2008 campaign and, miraculously, it gets a perfect greenwash, enabling it to get governmental carte blanche for state of the art hazardous drilling, the result being what could be predicted of such an environmental scofflaw. This leads me to think Birnbaum, a genuine, certified Greenie, may have been really horrified by all the favors I suspect she was pressured by her superiors to give to BP. Now she's resigned in the aftermath of this horror.
Guess the natives are getting restless with their PIMP!
Was Harry Mudd the real father? Is this the real root of certifigate?
now he's on record.
