Same reason a mugger puts a gun to your head.
Give them the money or something bad happens to someone you love.

If they cut something most voters didn’t care about they couldn’t squeeze more money out of taxpayers.

Why are schools the first place to start cutting?

The majority of the state's general fund goes to schools. And after last year's dispersion of money, many school districts responded by granting raise, while the rest of the state employees took pay cuts. Teacher greed is the most powerful force in Oregon.

Because the legislature is so far unwilling to reduce state salaries, and benefits; including gold-plated retirement benefits and pensions.
