He Was Supposed to Be Competent The spill is a disaster for the president and his political philosophy.
By PEGGY NOONAN
I don't see how the president's position and popularity can survive the oil spill. This is his third political disaster in his first 18 months in office. And they were all, as they say, unforced errors, meaning they were shaped by the president's political judgment and instincts.
There was the tearing and unnecessary war over his health-care proposal and its cost. There was his day-to-day indifference to the views and hopes of the majority of voters regarding illegal immigration. And now the past almost 40 days of dodging and dithering in the face of an environmental calamity. I don't see how you politically survive this.
The president, in my view, continues to govern in a way that suggests he is chronically detached from the central and immediate concerns of his countrymen. This is a terrible thing to see in a political figure, and a startling thing in one who won so handily and shrewdly in 2008. But he has not, almost from the day he was inaugurated, been in sync with the center. The heart of the country is thinking each day about A, B and C, and he is thinking about X, Y and Z. They're in one reality, he's in another.

Once again, asserting not only without evidence, but in the face of actual evidence. You ranted (without providing any facts yourself) that my posts were “fact-free”. You’ve done it again. I’ve provided facts in my post above. Several of them. I’m surprised you didn’t pick at least one to address and ignore the rest.
So basically, in an attempt to defend the legal profession against accusations of corruption, intellectual paucity and deceit, you proceed to ignore the problems of the profession, don’t address any of my points and you lie.
Well done.
No way will Obama be re-elected. A GOP will just begin the task of righting the ship. The turnaround cannot really occur without a GOP President. The public knows this. I predicted he will end his term with approval in the high 20s and be widely viewed as a complete and total disaster. Clinton won in 1996 because we had Bob Dole, a complete Doofus running for President. Clinton also tacked to the right, if you will recall.
And all of the leading hopefuls like Romney, Huckabee, etc are not?
Romney or huck = obama four more years.
Agreed.
I think we are going to need a petraeus like figure with track recors of success and credibility in 2012.
I would like it to be sarah but believe she is toxic to too many people to be able to get to 50.1 percent unless she does something much different.
Yep. Tina Fey made her too"Dan Quayle" like with any voter under 40.
These very TWO presidents were last seen this week whispering in each others ears: SESTAKGATE
Bill Clinton kneeling down and rearranging pebbles on the beaches of Normandy to show he cared and the nearly identical pose by Obama kneeling at a Gulf beach picking pebbles and stirring sand with his pinky to show he cares.
Coincidence? Hardly....
That's been my take on it for months;-)
In response to “Peggy”:
Back in the 1990’s, SoCal had a high magnitude earthquake, not The Big One, but big enough, the Northridge Quake.
We were fortunate to have a competent governor, Pete Wilson, who offered incentives to contractors to get the I-10, which had collapsed, up and running in an amazingly short time.
There was little of the post-Katrina type complaints about his efforts, in fact there were kudos.
Compare that to “Rebuilding LA” after the Rodney King riots, under the auspices of Los Angeles Mayor Tom Bradley, a Democrat.
Sorry Peggy, there is the historic record, and the Democrats are lousey executives.
Go bother somebody else. I'm done.
I can be rather annoying, that's true. But at least I'm not British!
I'm sorry that you can't see the horror that your profession has wrought and the corruption inherent in it. A simple example: The "green jobs czar" was to be Van Jones and his only "qualification" for the job was his law degree. (BTW, he admitted that he went to Yale because they had no grades. Hell, my foot fungus could graduate from Yale.)
With all of the controversy, no one commented on the fact that we have gotten to the point that a mere three years in law school seems to qualify one for anything! (Cf. Michelle Obama's job in Chicago.)
A lawyer's job is not to make things happen, but to keep them from happening. Sometimes that's a great thing, but when a nation is overrun with lawyers, it prevents growth and innovation.
If I have to be annoying to poke a hole in the bubble of the false assumption of the superior intellect of graduates of law schools, then so be it.
Go bother somebody else. I'm done.
You keep saying that, but you keep coming back. I'm not sure why.
Didn’t GHWBush suspend Davis-Bacon for that quake? Or was that another one?
Where the hell has Obama's shown competence outside of running his big fat mouth? If you were intelligent like I am, you would have known that this affirmative action hire hasn't shown himself to have done anything.
Deeds, not words.
