He Was Supposed to Be Competent The spill is a disaster for the president and his political philosophy.

By PEGGY NOONAN

I don't see how the president's position and popularity can survive the oil spill. This is his third political disaster in his first 18 months in office. And they were all, as they say, unforced errors, meaning they were shaped by the president's political judgment and instincts.

There was the tearing and unnecessary war over his health-care proposal and its cost. There was his day-to-day indifference to the views and hopes of the majority of voters regarding illegal immigration. And now the past almost 40 days of dodging and dithering in the face of an environmental calamity. I don't see how you politically survive this.

The president, in my view, continues to govern in a way that suggests he is chronically detached from the central and immediate concerns of his countrymen. This is a terrible thing to see in a political figure, and a startling thing in one who won so handily and shrewdly in 2008. But he has not, almost from the day he was inaugurated, been in sync with the center. The heart of the country is thinking each day about A, B and C, and he is thinking about X, Y and Z. They're in one reality, he's in another.

Peggy has a good closing paragraph:

“But Republicans should beware, and even mute their mischief. We’re in the middle of an actual disaster. When they win back the presidency, they’ll probably get the big California earthquake. And they’ll probably blow it. Because, ironically enough, of a hard core of truth within their own philosophy: when you ask a government far away in Washington to handle everything, it will handle nothing well. “

This is an argument against RINOs. But she doesn’t know it.

He as supposed to be competent??????

By what measure?

Only blind liberals, fools, and the disturbed could have thought that a person who never even ran so much as a lemonade stand, who never had a real job in his life, who had been a “community organizer”, and had voted “absent” over 130 times in the senate, would/could be a LEADER.

What qualifies him to be competent in anything OTHER than NOT making a tough decision?

I think if the gop wins big in november he may resign.

No, that's the best thing that can happen for him. A GOP blowout will save his presidency and assure him re-election just like Bill Clinton in 1994 cause they will push the agenda back towards the center.

Because he lied his way into office and he thinks he can lie his way out of any jam.

I don’t feel bad for one second, no matter how bad it gets. The whole concept of shuttling this unprepared individual to lead the United States was a terrible idea from the start. He had no business running, and the people were ignorant for putting him there. This needs to be a painful lesson for the country that can help lead us back to prosperity. I feel nothing for this arrogant fool or the people around him.

I didn’t mean it the way it came across. I loathe everything about him and think he is the most dangerous person ever to hold the office.

My point was more to the fact that without the press covering for him it is so plainly obvious how inept he is.

We really are screwed imho. Like someone else said god forbid we have another terrorits attack or worse.

There’s nothing surprising about Obama’s beating McLame. McLame THREW the election. Sarah almost dragged his carcass over the finish line.

Obama has no interest in the concerns of his so-called “countrymen.” He has no interest in politics—in the American sense. That is, he has no history of actually winning elections by persuading the electorate. Every election he has “won,” he did it by destroying his opponent with slime. This just didn’t happen to be necessary with McLame.

The most reassuring thing Obama ever said—if he meant it—was that he doesn’t care about a second term. That’s reassuring because, if he DOES care about a second term (or remaining in the WH beyond January 20, 2013), he CANNOT allow there to be an election in 2012.

Law school's not easy. Been there, done that, glad to escape with a degree. I breezed through an Ivy League college with a cum laude degree in history, but when I hit law school I really had to work for the first time.

The deal with Obama is that he got the Affirmative Action free ride all the way from high school through law school. Editor of the Law Review even though he never published a signed article and only one short unsigned note. Supposedly magna cum laude - but nobody's seen a grade. I don't think he's ever tried a case. Certainly he's never made a payroll or a financial decision. He's never had to work, only spew the usual socialist/marxist rhetoric and rabble-rouse.

Now he's in a real job for the first time, and it ain't pretty.

Obama is a pure ideologue completely unprepared and incapable of dealing with anything outside the agenda. He’s filled his administration with academics who have never done anything real and have only ever talked to people like themselves.

This is the kind of behavior that led to the Chernobyl disaster in the soviet union. Techs who actually knew how to do things were relegated to the sidelines while clueless communist party sycophants were left in control.

You want to be chilled to the bone? This arrogant, inept jackass and his commie minions have put themselves in charge of who gets to live and die.

Obama cares about his tribute to Paul McCartney more than he cares about US citizens.

The good old dummie days, *sigh*

BO: "then I am absolutely certain that generations from now, we will be able to look back and tell our children that this was the moment when we began to provide care for the sick and good jobs to the jobless; this was the moment when the rise of the oceans began to slow and our planet began to heal; this was the moment when we ended a war and secured our nation and restored our image as the last, best hope on Earth. this was the moment - this was the time - when we came together to remake this great nation so that it may always reflect our very best selves, and our highest ideals."

Yeah, that was the moment, alright. Peggy was right there, too.
