I guess what is confusing me is - wouldn’t the mud immediately start falling to the sea bed, after being jetted out of the bop and riser, since it is much heavier than water? The stuff coming out is going up, up, up...making me think it is lighter than water.

Under pressure it will go up until the velocity/weight allows it to settle back down assuming it is all heavier than water.

Water is heavier than air. Go outside and point your hose at full pressure, with a wind (current) straight up in the air with your thumb over it. Does it fall right back down?
