Last week, when Mexican President Felipe Calderon came to Washington, President Barack "Please-Adore-Me" Obama said, doing his famous John Lennon "Imagine there's no countries" imitation:
"In the 21st century we are not defined by our borders, but by our bond."
Keep in mind, this was in the midst of the great Arizona Immigration Law debate which had caused Calderon to issue a "travel warning" suggesting that Mexicans who might have been thinking about vacationing in Arizona should rethink their plans, about which many legal residents of Arizona responded: "Deal!"
Just a week later Obama announced he was sending an additional 1,200 troops to the border to … according to the LA Times: "The troops won't make arrests or otherwise intervene directly, but will help with support and surveillance targeted both at illegal border crossing and drug smuggling, according to an administration official who was not authorized to speak publicly."
So … Obama is ordering 1,200 National Guard troops to leave their homes, their families and their jobs to what; to set up a series of lemonade stands and help reduce some of that 173 quadrillion dollar debt he has run up?
The LA Times pointedly suggests Obama is "seeking political cover in his pursuit of immigration reform," and reminds us that
"The moves comes a month after Secretary of Homeland Security Janet Napolitano told a Senate committee that the U.S.-Mexico border 'is as secure as it has ever been.'"
I hope someone is keeping track of the stuff that keeps spewing out of Napolitano's mouth because there is going to be a best-selling book involved.
Remember when she announced that "the system worked" after the underwear bomber's tighty-whities didn't explode even though he had boarded a plane in Europe with no luggage, having paid for his ticket with cash after his father had warned the U.S. Embassy that his son was nuts?
Then, when the SUV bomber tried to blow up Times Square she announced that the U.S. Government was investigating whether it might have been a "potential terrorist attack."
Last week she said the Obama administration would not rest until "this well is sealed and this ocean and this area is cleaned up …" confusing the Gulf of Mexico with an ocean.
Where was I? Oh, yes. Obama and troops on the Arizona border.
The real issue about the troops is: What will be the rules of engagement?
If a squad of American soldiers happens on some drug or human smugglers will they be permitted to detain them? Arrest them? Pursue them in U.S. territory? Pursue them … into … Mexican … territory?
If they are fired upon from the Mexican side of the border, can they return fire?
There are dozens of these kinds of scenarios. The major question is: Is Obama putting U.S military personnel in harm's way because his job approval is dropping? I hope not, but we need an explanation from an administration official who is authorized to speak. Someone like President Obama.
MULLINGS will be making a personal inspection tour of the oil spill on Saturday. As personal punishment I will be traveling from Washington, DC to New Orleans by train. By AMTRAK train. It is expensive, inefficient, and inconvenient. It takes about 27 hours and that is only if all the cars stay on the tracks the entire way.
I suspect someone leaked my excellent plan to the White House staff because they announced yesterday that the President will be making a trip to Louisiana to look at the oil spill on Friday.
Obama has been roundly criticized for planning on attending fund raisers and other political events in California while forcing Napolitano and Interior Secretary Ken Salazar to be the public faces of the increasingly inept government handling of the increasingly destructive oil spill in the Gulf of Ocean.

Thank You. I was waiting for someone to define our common “bond”. My ancestors emigrated here legally at their own expnse, immediately set about assimiliating despite prejudice against them, and worked hard at becoming American.
I share no “bond” with people who sneak in, get jobs to send money back to Mexico for new refrigerators and TV’s, insist on welfare, free education and medical care for the dependents they smuggle in, insist on preserving their “culture” and language, fly their own flag over mine, and have contempt for the national history of gringos who “stole their land”.

Cutesy alliteration aside, what “bond” are you talking about, Zero? Do you mean “bond” in the sense of “chain” or “fetter?”. As in “bondage?” Because I don’t see a lot of Americans flocking to Mexico for their educational, medical, or welfare services. Whatever this imaginary bond is, it apparently only binds one side, but not the other.

Conservatives are suicidally polite. We feel bound to act nice, and so we go along with whatever euphemism the Left chooses for itself. On their side, Democrats loudly argue for truth in advertising for baldness cures but not in the marketplace of political ideas, where telling the truth is a lot more important. That is why the Left constantly seeks new PR labels to disguise itself.
Using the word “socialism” is taboo in American politics, but today the Democratic Party is socialist at heart. Even “liberal” isn’t accurate any more, because today’s Democrats are hardly the party of Cold War liberals like John F. Kennedy and Harry S Truman. Instead, they have fallen back on fuzzy, wishful Marxism. It’s where they feel most comfortable.
The Left is now pushing for yet a new PR label, “progressive,” which gently rings the old Marxist chimes for those in the know. If you call yourself a progressive, everybody who doesn’t agree must be a Neanderthal. But words mean things, and “socialist” is simply more accurate than either “liberal” or “progressive.”
On Iraq the key to Democrat thinking is that they are internationalists they despise nationalism of all kinds, seeing it as the cause of wars. But the old Communist anthem was of course “The Internationale.” Internationalism is a defining feature of socialism, going back to the 19th century.
It is our fundamental difference on foreign policy.
Conservatives see American patriotism as a saving grace. A widespread faith in the goodness of our country brought us through the dangers of the 20th century. Sure we made mistakes, being human, and politics being what it is. But for conservatives, the United States is still the last, best hope of mankind. The antiAmerican media therefore constantly tries to undermine proAmerican feelings. Instead, they look to socialist Europe and the socialist UN; against a century of facts, they would place our safety
in the hands of strangers.

But “American internationalism” Is an oxymoron; it contradicts itself. After 9/11 we know perfectly well what “American Internationalism” really means. It means that we pay for NATO and the UN, protect Europe with a nuclear umbrella for sixty years, and then, when terrorists cause mass civilian deaths in New York City and Washington, DC, the Europeans will scream and yell at us when we try to preempt further attacks.
For socialists, internationalism comes first and America a very distant second. We have no true allies in Europe, except for Britain, and Tony Blair is now losing his job over faithfully sticking by our alliance. Senator Clinton’s “American internationalism” is a slogan for milking Uncle Sam and screwing him at the same time. If you doubt it, consider this story from the Washington Post by Thomas Edsall, June 28, 1998, in the happy days before 9/11.
President Clinton and British Prime Minister Tony Blair are seeking to take advantage of the unprecedented number of Western governments controlled by centerleft parties to turn their “third way” political strategies in the United States and Great Britain into an international movement.
Third Way Socialism means piggybacking Labour socialism on top of Maggie Thatcher’s capitalism: Taxing the free market just enough to support the socialist state. Today, the free market in Britain is being taxed to sink British sovereignty into the greedy arms of the EU, utterly corrupt and antidemocratic. The people of Britain have now been so deeply indoctrinated that they hardly notice it any more.
For the Left, politics is too important to be honest about. It has that in common with Islamist fascism.
If and when American conservatives decide to call a socialist a socialist, the Left will scream that it’s is a McCarthyite smear. But is the word “socialism” defamatory or just the plain truth? In their hearts the Left believes, it believes fervently (in private), in caucusing with the Elect.
Socialism is a coherent political philosophy, painting a rosy future of peace and equality forever, if only the really good people achieve total power; in reality, the socialist fantasy just keeps slamming into a wall of failures, disasters, tyrannies, massacres and miseries wherever it’s tried.
But conservatives can’t even point to the Left’s endless record of failure if we don’t dare to use the word “socialism.” We have to find the courage to say the sword.
If you want to know what socialists really believe, read one Labour Councillor, Terry Kelly from Scotland. If Mr. Kelly seems like a nutball to you, keep in mind that he speaks for most of British Labour especially those who hate the traitor Tony Blair. He also sounds exactly like Moveon.org and the hard Left of the Democrat Party, which is now taking credit for the Leftist takeover of the US Congress.

There. He said it. It’s just the plain truth. Less than 20 years after the fall of the Soviet Union, the horrific past of Stalin and starvation is flushed down the memory hole. Socialists have not changed even one little bit. Reality has had no impact, because they are a millenarian sect that always has its eyes on an imaginary future. Yet peace and love are hard to find in Mr. Kelly’s highwhine rantings. Councillor Kelly passionately hates America, Israel and Republican “thugs.” His fidelity to “tolerance” does not include tolerance for the ideas of other people. These are the folks who control Europe, and who greeted the Democratic win last week with loud Hosannas.
George Orwell is always relevant. A former socialist himself, he became a passionate advocate of truthtelling. Remember this:
In a time of universal deceit, telling the truth becomes a revolutionary act.
Perhaps conservatives should think of themselves as truthtelling revolutionaries in a time of walltowall deceit. Using the sword is a step in the right direction.

Per Fox (Kelly), National Guard troops to be sent to Mexican border have been ordered not to patrol or interfere with worst, most violent smuggling routes across the border. The main mission will be to sit at desks in an administrative role far from the border. IOW, it’s a cynical misuse of the Guard.
Also, the federal government forbids border agents to patrol about 70% of the AZ border because of the potential damage to wild life habitats for owls, mice, etc. The Interior Department places most of the border off-limits to US patrols even as hundreds of thousands of illegals use these areas as a trash dump and toilet.

President Obama has finally decided to take action against the flow of drugs and illegal immigrants on our southern border, announcing a plan to mobilize 1,200 soldiers.
The president’s soothsayers must finally have noticed that Obama’s immigration non-policy and his kowtowing to Mexico’s president don’t sit well with the voters. Axelrod, et al must be worried, as there is no other explanation for this move — since it is purely political and cosmetic.
The president’s plan is a day late and a dollar short, wholly inadequate to get the job done.
In the late 19th century, the U.S. government built a series of forts in the American southwest with full complements of U.S. Cavalry. Some, like Fort Huachuca, established in 1877, are still active military posts. Huachuca was home to the famed all-black 10th Cavalry Regiment, better known as the “Buffalo Soldiers.” American icon Douglas MacArthur spent some of his youth in one of these forts — his father Arthur was the commanding officer.
The forts were designed to protect the settlers from the constant raids of the native Apaches, who didn’t take kindly to having their land taken.
It worked.....
