Vinod Khosla, Silicon Valley's most prominent "green" venture capitalist, announced today that former British Prime Minister Tony Blair is joining Khosla Ventures as a senior adviser.

The announcement, made at a small invitation-only gathering at the picturesque Cavallo Point Lodge in Sausalito, adds international star power to Khosla Ventures. Since leaving office, Blair has focused on climate change, energy security and public policy and is one of the world's most eloquent advocates for the environment.

"I'm absolutely thrilled, honored and delighted to team up with Vinod and the people he has working for him," said Blair today. "Vinod is one of the most creative, dynamic and extraordinary people I've ever met in my life."

Khosla and Blair apparently met in 2008 at an Ecology Summit in the Caribbean hosted by British tycoon Richard Branson.

Founded in 2004, Khosla Ventures focuses on cleantech and information technology startups, with a portfolio that includes carbon sequestration and storage, solar, batteries, biofuels, building materials, energy efficiency and next-generation lighting and appliance companies.

One of the start-ups in the vast portfolio is Calera, which works on carbon-negative building products. Blair and Khosla planned to tour the Calera green cement demonstration plan in Moss Landing today.

"We are not trying to do incremental things," said Khosla, who is keenly interested in funding technologies that can be widely adopted in fast-growing India and China. "We are trying to do the stuff of dreams."

Vinod Khosla is one of the founder of Sun Microsystems, and probably had the best return of any VC in the last twelve years. (He used to be part of Kleiner Perkins) He doesn’t invest exclusively in clean tech, or whatever you want to call it. He’s not as religious about it as John Doerr. He’s a brilliant guy.
