Because it is common for children to fantasize about the missing piece in their lives. He refers to his father's "image", not to his flesh and blood father - he is searching for both his father and himself.

Maybe most children, but we're talkin' about Obama here.

He's just lyin' his lyin' butt off -- assuming it was Obama who wrote those words -- pretty purple stuff.
