This was an interesting case, because while doctors in southern Arizona had been notified to be on the lookout for Dengue coming up from Mexico, doctors in central AZ had received no such alerts.
The girl ended up going to no fewer than five doctors, none of whom had a clue. Then finally, after a relatively short Internet search, there was a 13-for-13 symptoms match for Dengue. So she asked the sixth doctor to do a test for it. Bingo.
But the mystery remained for a while as to how a mosquito could have flown up from Mexico just for her? But the answer was obvious. She and her boyfriend lived in apartments right next to some railroad tracks. The mosquito had hitched a ride.
Otherwise, with the building of the Tempe town lake, whose rubber dam just burst a few days ago, there was great concern as to the potential of several mosquito-borne diseases. St. Louis and Equine encephalitis and West Nile virus being of most concern.
But the day was saved by all of a sudden, a surfeit of dragonflies. And thus endeth the mosquito problem for quite a while.
I mention this, because not too long ago, I discovered that there are professional dragonfly breeders. No idea how much they cost per head, but you might consider starting your own herd.
