Cokie Roberts: Blumenthal should quit
The Hill ^ | 5/23/10 | Jordan Fabian

ABC News analyst Cokie Roberts said Sunday that Connecticut Senate candidate Richard Blumenthal (D) should end his campaign over his misstatements about his Vietnam War record.

The New York Times this week reported that Blumenthal stated several times that he said he served "in" Vietnam during the war and that he told anecdotes as if he saw action there.

Blumenthal served in the Marine Reserve in Washington, D.C. after receiving several deferments. Roberts thinks that Republicans could pick up the seat of retiring Sen. Chris Dodd (D-Conn.) due to Blumenthal's errors:

TAPPER: Donna, you're a Democratic strategist. If he came to you and said, "What do I do?" what would you tell him?

BRAZILE: Well, first of all, he apologized, and he should continue to apologize, but he needs to get this burden off his back and get back to talking to voters about the real issues. The longer he talks about this and the more tapes and the more, you know, well, on this occasion, I said it this time, I didn't say it this time. Voters don't care about that. They care about their jobs, their health care, their way of life. Mr. Blumenthal has an incredible record of public service, but if he can't talk about the issues, voters will remember this mistake.

ROBERTS: If I were a Democratic strategist, I'd tell him to get out of the race.

TAPPER: Just out?

ROBERTS: Out, because I think that -- again, it's not a year for phonies. And -- and people are going to hold this against him.

Like Brazile suggested, Democratic leaders have accepted Blumenthal's apology, citing his strong record with veterans during his two decade tenure as state attorney general.

Democrats have turned their focus on Kentucky Senate candidate Rand Paul (R), who questioned the legality of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 this week.

The law ended sanctioned racial discrimination.

“Democratic leaders” don’t care if Blumenthal is a liar who insulted every American. After all, it’s standard RAT procedure to lie about everything.

This reminds me of when B-1 Bob Dornan told us there were Democrats who cited their time on the Armed Services Committee as being akin to serving in the military. Yeah, sure -- all those bullets whizzing overhead during committee hearings. Dopes.

I’m sick of politicians who say they take full responsibility for their actions, knowing they will pay no price for it.Blumenthal is overwhelmingly supported by the Rats in Connecticut.Lying and cheating is all part of their DNA.He will not drop out and will pay no price for his stolen valor.

I agree. For them to jump off the bandwagon so quickly is odd.

Of course, I can't imagine that Blumenthal has endeared himself to many "journalists" - he's that creepy.

I am beginning to think this is in defense of the NYSlimes rather than against Blumenthal.

Because the dems just love their liars.

Yep, the Democrats sure love their lying selves:

Democratic delegates ignore controversy, nominate Blumenthal (gets cheers and applause)

There is no surprise from the Democrats - they have the stones to try and bring Spitzer back, liars and pimps, that is all they are. They celebrate them. Look at Clinton - Grand Master Pimp Rapist - and still beloved. What he did to woman should have put him behind bars. I love how these feminist a-holes could actually defend his behavior, even after what he tried to do with Paula Jones, a lowly state employee. He pulled his pants down in front of her - the Governor of Arkansas - and asked for sex, after she was brought there by his subordinates! I think it is a crime! But these Dem-left feminists let it slide, saying since she did not directly work for the governor it was not sexual harassment. What stupefying hypocrites! You would think that normal people would disown him? Not Democrats!

What about Juannita Broaddrick - ‘better put some ice on that’?

This hypocrisy really needs more examination!

“She’s a weird duck.”

Her father was House Majority Leader who represented Lousiana for 26 years. When he died in a plane crash, her mother filled the seat for another 18 years. Cokie really knows politics. Too bad she’s a Democrat like her parents.

Naw, Cokie is wrong. WE NEED BLUMENTHAL.

Although CT people will be tempted to vote for him just because he's your typical Democrat, the notoriety might well suppress the vote and keep the Democrats at home.

We are best off running our candidates against this guy and his Congressional wannabee colleagues.

It is theoretically possible for us to win the entire CT delegation as long as this guy is running.

I suggest that even if he died suddenly of a heart attack or something, the RNC should put money into a regular "Weekend At Bernies" scenario and keep that guy in the game!
