inn ^ | 5/23/10 | Hana Levi Julian

The Nazi swastika is apparently not considered illegal in the Lithuanian city of Klaipeda, despite former assumptions that the symbol was not to be displayed nationwide, a common legislative ruling in Eastern Europe.

A local court has ruled the sign is a centuries-old symbol that depicts the sun. The judge in the case, which lasted three months, justified his ruling by adding that the symbol is found on numerous historic artifacts.

It’s also an Indian [”native-amercan”] symbol for peace; depicting two crossed arrows broken twice.

Hitler redesigned the Swastika to make it a dynamic symbol of NAZI triumphalism. The original and generic swastika is not the same as the NAZI swastika.

My grandmother was in a nursing home in Philadelphia years ago. It was a very, very old building. There were swastikas in the tiles of the floor. Note - the building was built long before Hitler’s time.

Kinda like what’s happened/happening to certain English words, like: ‘progressive’ or ‘liberal’.

The swastika or “swastik” is a sanskrit symbol and one of the most sacred symbols in Hinduism going back thousands of years. hitler and the nazis hijacked the symbol and it has had a negative connotation ever since. The term “Aryan” also has origination in Hinduism and Indian history/culture.

It popped up in old city halls (floor tiles) in Boston area...also I have indeed seen it in Indian (as in Indian subcontinent) symbolism. It was woven into oriental rugs, etc

Same deal in Thermopolis, Wyoming; trim on a building consists of swastikas. The building was built shortly after Hitler’s birth. I seem to recall some stone age cave markings depicting swastikas.

It is a symbol in many cultures around the world. It was not a symbol of evil until the Nazis appropriated it as their own.

However, once it was appropriated, it came to symbolize what the Nazis wanted it to symbolize. And that, like it or not, is what it will forever symbolize.

Just like the confederate flag will forever symbolize racism, and the rainbow (originally a divine symbol) will forever symbolize homosexuality, as will the word 'gay.'

Once 'appropriated,' the original meaning is mute.

I admit that's a great story, and likely one of many told by the many jewelry sellers who traded along the East Coast in the 1920's and 1930's. Alas, broken arrows are useless junk, and likely means someone's going hungry, not a sign of peace. The design is commonly referred to as 'rolling logs', and made it's first common appearance in American Indian artwork in the late 1840's.

Yes, "effing retard" was a perfectly fine appellation until the Nazis got a hold of it.

This was the offical patch of the US Army's 45th Division up until 1939-40 when it was decided to be changed to an american indian "Thunderbird" style patch.

I know, strange, but true.

Here is a brigade flag in current use in the Finnish Air Force:

Note that the Finnish swastika is in a horizontal-vertical orientation. The Nazis rotated theirs 45 degrees.
