Arizona laws vs. New York practices
NY Post ^ | May 23, 2010 | Kyle Smith

We learned this month that New York City cops have stopped and frisked nearly 3 million people since 2004, that most of those were minorities, that about 88% of those stopped weren’t ticketed or charged with any wrongdoing, and that last year alone 490,000 blacks and Latinos were stopped by NYPD — against 53,000 whites.

So where is Al Sharpton, where are the movie stars, where is the outrage on par with Arizona?

It could be that when it comes to your back yard, instead of some faraway state that you imagine is full of hotheads and nutters, you realize security and civil liberties are on the same seesaw. More of the former means less of the latter.

Last year 575,000 people in this city were stopped and frisked — and 762 of them turned out to be carrying guns. That’s a lot of guns, but only a bit more than one in a thousand stopped were carrying firearms. Are police going too far? New Yorkers don’t seem to think so. They didn’t bounce Mayor Bloomberg out of office last fall.

Maybe Sharpton isn’t raising a fuss because he realizes the NYPD statistics show that police actually aren’t being racist. The percentage of blacks stopped and frisked who were arrested was about 6%. For whites, it was the same. If an ethnic group was being singled out for harassment based on race, you would expect the arrest rate of that group to be lower.

“The percentage of blacks stopped and frisked who were arrested was about 6%. For whites, it was the same.”
Forget the race stuff. What i see is a 94% incorrect rate. No fun being frisked for no damn reason.

6% black, about the same for whites, so that would be 12% right there and the %’s for other minorities weren’t listed.

No its 6% or each pool so when you combine the two pools you still have 6%. We have no reason to think any other racial group is going to be significantly different or change that overall 6% number.

Where did you get that they were frisked for "no damn reason"? They were obviously frisked for a reason, they just didn't arrest all of them. Or would you rather they wait until someone is killed, is that reason enough for you? Are you going to volunteer?

I’m sorry but you approve of police stopping anyone they want for any reason they can imagine? Is that what you’re saying?Like batting .06 is a real good average? is that what you’re saying as you imagine what an awful person i am? I happen to live in NYC for virtually my entire life and i assure you the cops here pretty much do whatever they wish.
Wait for people to get killed? They arrested 6 out of every hundred they frisked. You think these guys are on the ball?

I'm saying I have faith in the police to be more interested in safeguarding the people of their city then they are in merely hastling "inncoent" citizens. Yes, I do approve of them stopping anyone who looks suspicious, like they may have drugs, or be threatening to someone.

I think in NYC it's imparitive that they let everyone know they are watching. If you don't like it, move out to California where they don't dare do anything other than call the coroner.

You’re making assumptions while thinking it could never be you or yours. Hopefully you’re correct.

I agree with this
“I’m saying I have faith in the police to be more interested in safeguarding the people of their city then they are in merely hastling “inncoent” citizens. Yes, I do approve of them stopping anyone who looks suspicious, like they may have drugs, or be threatening to someone.”

And it applies to the AZ police as well.
I wish the ones shouting racism at AZ would actually look around them and see what could go on in NYC or Az or idaho etc.

So you don’t want police in NYC or anywhere to do their job?

The point of the article is the hypocrisy of the left.
Are you for AZ being allowed to enforce the Federal law/

Pardon me. Where did i say i don’t want the Arizona police to do their job? Oh that’s right a little checking around and you might see me saying deport illegals every chance i get.
Now you tell me exactly where it says that police randomly frisking people is part of their job?
You understand what your problem is? You’re making the assumption that the police are always correct. They’re not. Six out of a hundred sounds like a horrible record to and quite arbitrary.

You're accusing the police of RANDOMLY frisking people. Where does the article say that? Oh wait, it doesn't.

6 of 100 is about as random as you get.

Only in your mind, and the last I knew 88% plus 6% only equals 94%, so I was right and your made up math is wrong. With the various threats that NY gets, its better to be safe than sorry.

6% of one pool and 6% of another equals 6% when they’re combined. Not 12.
Math check one pool of 100 with 6 arrests and a second pool of 200 with 12=18 arrests out of 300=6%.
I guess the last you knew was wrong.

I don't feel comfortable when a cop eyes me as if I've done something wrong, when all I'm doing is trying to cross the street while listening to music.

Then if you don’t like that smile at them and say “Thanks for all you do officer”. You’d be surprised how well that works.
