T. S. Eliot wrote about when memory mixes with desire. Politicians get in trouble when desire nixes memory.
They know they are misrepresenting an experience, but cant help themselves. Their desire to be the person they describe is too overpowering.
Politicians are actors trapped in the same part, and some occasionally feel the need to punch up the script. They are salesmen engaged in the hard sell, and some occasionally get carried away....
Consider Richard Blumenthal.... Blumenthal added a filigree here and there, not because he needed them to win, but perhaps because those more heroic actions fed his innermost desires.

So do dowdy old NY Slime Columnists
Booze as Brain-cell Killer
MoDo needs to re-read “Animal House”
..or at least the parts that apply to her.
I agree with your comment, and would wonder out loud why modo would omit prez brocko. No "Lies as Wishes" (aka "Dreams of my Father", aka "Dreams of my non-existent past") column should be complete without it.
Glad I remembered to post this.
sort of like white, suburban kids trying to act gangsta,
only in reverse.
I only visited this thread in hopes of seeing the CZJ pictures. Imagine my disappointment.
Dowd thinks its OK to ‘wish’ or ‘act’ as if you were a VietNam Veteran.....
Of course, if you are a REAL VietNam Veteran, Dowd approves of spitting on you because you are NOT pretending.
When Obama said that he cared about education or health, that was a lie too.
But this is a different kind of lie than the usual politician b.s. Its a lie about an actual checkable fact that is either true or untrue.
Maureen trying to smooth over the damage by smearing other politicians, especially Republicans. “It was just an innocent white lie!”.
Yeah, and if but for you posting that, I’d’ve forget to remember planning to hit that.
NOW I remember and all my plans are undone; woe be me.
Adam Savage said it much better and with far fewer words...”I Reject Your Reality And Substitute My Own.”
So ... given her reasoning anyone want to start a pool on how long it is before MoDo changes her byline to “Mrs. Michael Douglas”?
I’m so glad Mo pointed out this important distinction as most people lie to do damage to themselves and reduce their standing in the eyes of others. /s
I’m sure a BUNCH of us are glad you remembered to post it.
Dan Quayle supported the Vietnam War that he avoided when his family pulled strings to get him into the Indiana National Guard. Yet he called himself a Vietnam-era veteran in campaign literature when he ran for the Senate in 1980.
MO Do, what's wrong with Dan Quale accurately referring to himsself as a "Vietanm-era veteran," when that's excatly what he was, as I was when I spent 1968 and 1969 stateside in the Army administering defense contracts. Quale served honorably and acccurately described his service. OTOH, Blumenthal lied about his service and Kerry served dishonorably, as overwhelmingly proven by the heroic Swiftvets.
Maureen, for most of us outside politics and journalism, when you start confusing what you wish were true with what actually is true, it’s time to start consulting mental health professionals.
Brilliant!
i guess yellow is your favorite color? that why u posted it?
