That's just the demand from the first $100 Letter from the Lawyer.

If Dohrn refuses that settlement, the stakes rise dramatically.

The article says "More than $50,000".

The "$50k" is probably the local threshold to differentiate types of claims from each other and determine which path it takes through the civil court system. The true amount could really be in the millions, depending on how the thresholds work.

Growing up the local threshold for small claims, for instance, was <=$1,500. There was one case that we knew was for a half million, but the local paper still described the initial filing as being for "greater than $1,500"
