More than 60 children and nine school districts across California filed a historic lawsuit Thursday, arguing that elected officials have failed in their constitutional obligation to support public schools.
The case has the potential to completely overhaul how, and how much, money flows into schools.
In short, the case seeks to force the state Legislature and governor to fix a broken education funding system - one that has failed to take into account what it actually costs to educate a child, plaintiffs' attorneys said.
The lawsuit would require Sacramento to fund schools based on what state law requires they offer to children - qualified teachers, books, physical education, science labs, special education, English language instruction and more.

Maybe I could work up a tear about them not getting funding if they actually taught something worth learning.
There is never enough money for these people is there? Where do they think this money will come from? The whole country is hurting right now but they don’t care. They want more and more.
Let the Saudis fund more madrassas to take the place of some of the schools. Won't be much of a change of curriculum.
Forcing the State to spend money defending its current schools funding in court will somehow make more money for those schools just magically appear, is that it?
This is the reason why the NEA and their ilk have pushed for state constitutional amendments saying public education is a right. Look at the effects in NJ, NY and who knows where else where these suits have been sucessful.
And therein lies the arguement against Socialism!

the real kicker is 25 of these students are illegal immigrants.
Of course public schools have no such constitutional obligation that they actually educate California kids.
40% of the state budget not enough?
/src on/NJ and NY spend twice what California spends per-pupil. So yes it is not enough./src off/
Let the lefty judges give them a judgment...siphoning ever more taxpayer money into a failed single-payer (government) education system will collapse the California economy and create all out civil war among the tax eating constituencies. Should be fun to watch..
The "children" are tools and the school districts are incompetent scammers.
CALIFORNIA CONSTITUTION ARTICLE 1 DECLARATION OF RIGHTS
(1) Right to Safe Schools. All students and staff of public primary, elementary, junior high, and senior high schools, and community colleges, colleges, and universities have the inalienable right to attend campuses which are safe, secure and peaceful.
b) A citizen or class of citizens may not be granted privileges or immunities not granted on the same terms to all citizens. Privileges or immunities granted by the Legislature may be altered or revoked.
constitutional obligation to support public schools.

There, that's more accurate.
I’d rather they just gave me my money back so I can spend it on effective education for my kids.
I hate paying twice for school.
Now would be a real good time to define the public education mandate as reading, writing and arithmetic. Those things will help you whether you dig ditches or run companies. The indoctrinators can try to ply their trade in a free market. Of course since this is the land of Fruits, Nuts and Flakes, they will agree to pay them all CEO salaries, send them to communist camp and go smoke some more medicinal wowie weed.
Very Greece-like. Entitlement give aways clash with the reality of..... there’s no money left.
There is never enough money for these people is there? Where do they think this money will come from?””
More than 50% of all property taxes go to support the screwells. Then, 50% of the California Lottery tickets sale money is used in support of the screwells.
If the Lottery is going to pay out $10 million to the Lottery winner—that means that about $10 million supposedly went into the screwell system.
Perhaps there needs to be a very detailed audit of the Lottery funding for the schools. Ticket sales have slowed down with the economy, but is still thriving.
The waste in the screwells is the mainproblem.
They are serving breakfast to “low income kids” now & a move is afoot to start serving dinner, also, “because these kids don’t get enough food at home”.
Sorry-—as a tax PAYER I am not responsible for feeding kids that are not mine. IF I choose to donate to the local food bank, so be it. But taking my money & feeding someone else’s kids is just plain wrong. Who is checking to see that my kids are getting fed as well as those kids now getting 3 meals a day at school?
A friend of mine works in the Los Angeles school system. She is on a rotational basis to monitor the cafeteria in the AM for these kids getting ‘breakfast’.
She has told me on numerous occasions that those kids fill up their trays with food-—pick at it while texting & giggling & then will throw over 50% of the food into the garbage can while glaring at her & daring her to say a single thing about the waste. It totally disgusts her.
It totally disgusts me, also.
