It would be instructive to look at Antarctic sea ice extent along with this graph. It is my understanding that total sea ice is in fact increasing, put shifting to the south polar region.

That can be conveniently ignored because it doesn’t fit the storyline. The only thing notable about antarctic ice is that state-sized chunks are breaking off and floating away.
