South Korea's president said Friday his country was caught in a "perfect military ambush" when a North Korean torpedo sank a naval warship, but called for a cautious response to the disaster that left 46 sailors dead.
President Lee Myung-bak made the comments at an emergency national security meeting convened one day after an official report concluded that North Korea was responsible for the deadly sinking of the South Korean patrol ship Cheonan. North Korea has denied involvement and vowed "all-out war" in case of any moves to retaliate over the sinking.
An international team of civilian and military investigators declared Thursday that a North Korean submarine fired a homing torpedo on March 26, ripping the 1,200-ton ship in two. Fifty-eight sailors were rescued, but 46 died South Korea's worst military disaster since the Korean War.
"We were caught in a perfect military ambush by North Korea while our people were resting in the late hours," Lee said at the start of the meeting, according to a statement by his office.
Lee called the sinking a "military provocation" and said it violated the U.N. Charter as well as the truce that ended the fighting in the 1950-53 Korean War.
"Because this is a serious and important issue, I believe there must not be a single mistake in all of our responsive measures, and that we must be highly prudent," he said.
Discussion at the meeting focused on international cooperation, military readiness, inter-Korean relations and preparedness against unconventional threats from North Korea, including cyberterrorism, spokeswoman Kim Eun-hye said in the statement.

Does anyone here remember when North Korea hacked to death
-—that’s right -—
hacked to death two of our military men on the DMZ line???
Remember what the response was?
Nothing!
Well, you may see something different in the movies
but the American government’s response for years has been
Nothing.
‘cept to give them millions of tons of free food; oh yeah, we got that response down good.
We do not want to start a nuclear war, right?
Tiger had a great idea. Allow South Korea to develop ballistic missiles. Those missiles will be targeted on Chinese bases. This would put pressure on China to force changes inside North Korea.
I do hope it does come true, even though Zero would probably balk at it.
That was only a blatant act of war NK committed...but I guess with President Chicken Neck in the White House, you have to say “cautious” and take a position of submission. SK can’t rely on the US for support.
If President Lee fights hard and long enough I think he can do it. He can throw this incident in Zero’s face. I would like to see it come true too.
No, I don’t advocate nuclear war -— that’s why some strength was needed 20 and 30 years ago.
We have NO ideas about what to do, nothing innovative, that’s why we look so dumb and so weak on the international stage ...
There are (still) other strategies besides nuclear war
Something quieter, something sneakier.
For example, we could cut off his supply of Hennessy cognac, seeing as he is the world’s #1 consumer .........
Did you know he owns 20,000 DVDs and 200 “mistresses” -— while the whole country is 4 inches shorter than their South Korean counterparts; he is literally starving the entire country to death.
Just like Zimbabwe.
Yo Bush; ya wanna take down some dictators??? I have a few for you ...
I think that Tiger’s solution is the key.
Too much grit required.
Rejected at the door by Hillary, Zero, Nancy, BCC, and would have been by all those who came before them too. Esp Madeline.
Didn’t she shake his hand with a big big smile???
Lesseeeeeee, NK has the bomb, Pakistan, Iran, China,
Soon to add what? SK? Japan? Egypt? Zimbabwe?
Gee guess we don’t need any National Defense or F-22 fighters.
Gotta save that 0.000002% of the budget donchaknow???
I think that President Lee can make the arguement that he needs more in his arsenal to counter the North Korean threat. He can make that arguement now and nobody can really stop him.
Remember the Laurel missile deal?
Clinton's administration signed affidavits that removed export controls on sensitive technologies. Laurel and Hughs Space Corp and Northrup were major contributors to 1996 Clinton campaign. In return for their support, Clinton had the export controls moved from the State Department fot the Justice Department. He could get away with removing the controls at the Justice Dept., allowing Northrup to sell the technology. Laurel and Hughs sold China missile guidance, satellite encryption and jamming technologies. The state dept. later filed 123 counts of sensitive tech transfers by the Clinton admin through Laurel to China. This is just one type of incident.
What should we give them this time to make them our friends??? I know, maybe we aim our nukes at ourselves and give them the button?
There is only one answer here, but it won't happen. Nuke them first.
“We have NO ideas about what to do”
I know what to do...
