WASHINGTON (AP) - President Barack Obama stepped up his criticism of Arizona's controversial immigration law Wednesday, calling it "misdirected" and warning that it has the potential to be applied in a discriminatory fashion.
Speaking at a joint news conference with Mexico's President Felipe Calderon, Obama called for overhauling the nation's immigration laws and said that can't be done unless Republicans support it.
"We can do so if we create a safer border, a border that will unite us instead of dividing us, uniting our people," Calderon said. "We can do so with a community that will promote a dignified life in an orderly way for both our countries."
The controversy over the Arizona law, which would make it a state crime to be in the country illegally, hung over Calderon's visit. Both leaders oppose the law, with Obama directing the Justice Department to review it for possible civil rights violations, and Calderon's government issuing a travel warning for Arizona, out of concern that Mexicans face an adverse political environment there.
Calderon made good on his pledge to take up the immigration issue during his meetings with Obama. He said the Arizona law criminalized migration and could encourage discrimination. He also called for the U.S. and Mexico to work together to solve the complex, politically sensitive immigration issue.

Poll: Majority of Americans back Arizona immigration law
By Margaret Talev
WASHINGTON A strong majority of Americans support Arizona's controversial new immigration law and would back similar laws in their own states, a new McClatchy-Ipsos poll found.
Sixty-one percent of Americans and 64 percent of registered voters said they favored the law in a survey of 1,016 adults conducted May 6-9.
Strikingly, nearly half of Democrats like the law, under which local law enforcement officers are tasked with verifying people's immigration status if they suspect them of being in the country illegally. While the Democratic Party generally is regarded as more sympathetic to illegal immigrants' plights, 46 percent of Democrats said they favored the law for Arizona and 49 percent said they would favor its passage in their own states.
More than eight in 10 Republicans and 54 percent of independents favor the law.

The whole bunch of traitors is insisting they haven’t read the bill. My opinion is that it’s a blatant lie so they can get away with misrepresenting what is actually in the law.

Calderon said. "We can do so with a community that will promote a dignified life in an orderly way for both our countries."Why doesn't ONE SINGLE REPORTER ask this hypocrite to lead the way by reforming Mexico's own immigration laws as they pertain to American citizens?
A painfully obvious question, isn't it?
I'm sure there are more than a few Americans who might enjoy a summer or two working on a resort in Cabo or Alcapulco.

Barking Obama shall go on a smear campaign against states seeking to solve problems ignored by the DC Empire—this is always his approach to ridicule and smear honest citizens who work and pay taxes to support his lavish lifestyle. Let the people of AZ stand firm in the face of the enemy from across the border and within the White Hut. May the country survive this disgusting excuse for a leader; bare none, this America-hating piece of kenyan trash is not fit to clean cesspools.

the law, under which local law enforcement officers are tasked with verifying people's immigration status if they suspect them of being in the country illegally
Can't ANY of these reporters get this right? Every single article I've read has this phrase without the really important part. How hard is it to continue the sentence with "after LAWFUL contact?" Or, better yet, why can't they just quote the bill outright?
"FOR ANY LAWFUL CONTACT MADE BY A LAW ENFORCEMENT OFFICIAL OR A LAW
21 ENFORCEMENT AGENCY OF THIS STATE OR A LAW ENFORCEMENT OFFICIAL OR A LAW
22 ENFORCEMENT AGENCY OF A COUNTY, CITY, TOWN OR OTHER POLITICAL SUBDIVISION OF
23 THIS STATE WHERE REASONABLE SUSPICION EXISTS THAT THE PERSON IS AN ALIEN WHO
24 IS UNLAWFULLY PRESENT IN THE UNITED STATES,A REASONABLE ATTEMPT SHALL BE
25 MADE, WHEN PRACTICABLE, TO DETERMINE THE IMMIGRATION STATUS OF THE PERSON,
26 EXCEPT IF THE DETERMINATION MAY HINDER OR OBSTRUCT AN INVESTIGATION...."
Sorry for the all caps, but that is how it was written in the PDF file of the law that is out on the internet for the whole world to read. Took me less than 30 seconds to copy and paste it. I guess that's just too much hard work for today's journalists. Unless they have some kind of agenda or something. Nah. Couldn't be! /sarcasm.

Obama doubles down on stupidity. This is a losing issue for him and yet he persists. I wonder why those around him haven't warned him. I guess he feels he knows better than his advisors.
