L.A. Mayor Dismisses Warning That Arizona Could Cut Off Power Over Boycott

Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa on Wednesday defiantly rejected a warning by a top Arizona utilities official that the state could cut off power to Los Angeles should the city proceed with its boycott of all things Arizona.

Spokesman David Beltran told Fox News that the message didn't even warrant a response.

"We're not going to respond to threats from a state which has isolated itself from the America that values freedom, liberty and basic human rights," Beltran said.

That was after Gary Pierce, a commissioner on the five-member Arizona Corporation Commission, wrote a letter to Villaraigosa slamming his City Council's decision to boycott the Grand Canyon State -- in protest of its immigration law -- by suspending official travel there and ending future contracts with state businesses.

Noting that a quarter of Los Angeles' electricity comes from Arizona power plants, Pierce threatened to pull the plug if the City Council does not reconsider.

"Doggone it -- if you're going to boycott this candy store ... then don't come in for any of it," Pierce told FoxNews.com.

Don’t threaten do it!!!!!!

Again, there is no threat from AZ!

LA said, "We don't want to do business with Arizona."

Arizona said, "Fine, I guess you don't want to buy our electrons."

LA made the threat. AZ was describing what following up on the threat would entail. LA mayor claims that AZ is so ridiculous, they don't deserve a response. Conclusion: LA is full of hot air, and AZ proved it.

I do not know why you are aiming your venom at me. I am defending Arizona. Now, if we want to have an intelligent discussion, rather than playing fantasy games, the fact is that Arizona is mature enough not to make threats.

Moreover, as a businessman, you should know that AZ cutting off power to LA (if they even CAN do it without affecting the rest of CA) would likely violate a whole bunch of contracts that are in place. In short, they would set themselves up for lawsuits and injunctions and legal challenge. AZ has its hands full already. The commie running LA has been shown to be all talk and no action, and that is a good start.

I have no idea what got you so riled. But this is Free Republic, and I will state my opinion on California, Illinois, Red China or Alpha Centuri.

Those darn transformers just go pop from time to time...

Or just throw a spotted owl on a transformer... That should be followed by a court order to shut down the power lines so no other sacred birds get fried...

So ... LA is going to continue buying electricity from Arizona. As I thought, it was all just a bluff by LA.

Moral cowards...

I don’t think he threatened to cut off the power, did he? I thought he just was wondering if LA would continue to buy power from Arizona.

Arizona did not "threaten" to cut off the power.

Arizona pointed out that, if a boycott was in effect, Arizona would be willing to help in the boycott by canceling the power contract.

The Los Angeles Mayor talks the talk but is too cowardly to walk the walk.

Well just as a point of fact.

There are any number of ways to turn off the power to LA (and likely surrounding areas) without actually violating any of their current contracts.

“Safety” issues, “maintenance” issues, “environmental” issues etc.

It would only take 30 seconds to make the point.

Yes but that didn't stop the media from spinning it into Arizona pulling LA's plug. Not that the media cares about truth. Tony Villar will only boycott something that won't hurt him..."oh we still want the 25 percent of our power we get from you...don't let a little boycott get in the way of that..."

Mayor of Los Angeles Antonio Villaraigosa and Prisila Rodriguez (daughter) arrive for the State Dinner

He is not worried. He is eating Wagyu Beef (compliments of the taxpayer's) and partying hardy.

Time to throw the switch for a day or two just see how they’ll like it.

That, or jack up the rates by 10,000%.

Discourse in this nation is getting more snarly by the week, and I'm not talking just about the Arizona situation, but in general. Guess we're slouching towards a Ft. Sumter-ish type of moment somewhere, one of these days.

Assholes. They JUST DID RESPOND, by saying that.
