LONDON John Shepherd-Barron, the Scotsman credited with inventing the world's first automatic cash machine, has died after a short illness. He was 84.

Shepherd-Barron once said that he came up with the idea of the cash dispensers after being locked out of his bank. He also said that his invention was inspired by chocolate vending machines.

One of the more useful inventions of the last century (which was filled with many useful inventions).
I am not sure when I first began using ATMS but I would guess it was 25 or so years ago. Anyone under the age of 30 -35 do not know what life was like before the ATM.
If you needed cash, you either had to get to a bank while it was openned, )and back then, banker hours meant they opened around 10 and closed at 4)or try to cash a check at a store, not always an easy thing to do.
A lot of stores would charge you money to cash a check.
At to that on line bill paying and I am down to writing one check a month (the church does not take ATM or credit).

There was a fine Mansion in my hometown built by a wealthy inventor back in the twenties. His great invention? The pay telephone. Nowadays you would be hard pressed to find a payphone anywhere, but it made a fortune for him and his family.
