There were vehicles in front of the bikers.
McDonald's vehicle struck the two motorcycles, then Lucarelli's truck, and her truck then struck the last vehicle in line at the traffic light,

The article says another car was -stopped- in front of them.
The had no choice but to stop, too.
Their killer apparently made the choice not to.
