The boyhood home of former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney is slated to be torn down as part of an effort to rejuvenate Detroit.
The 5,500-square-foot home, built in 1918 and located on a .4-acre lot in the toney Palmer Woods neighborhood, has fallen into disrepair in recent years, a neighbor said. Romney and his parents, George and Lenore, lived in the home from 1941 to 1953.
Shortly after moving from the home at 1860 Balmoral Drive, George Romney became chairman of American Motors Corp. and, later, governor of Michigan.
Attempts to reach Romney spokesman Eric Fehrnstrom yesterday were unsuccessful.
The home is being torn down as part of Detroit Mayor Dave Bings push to demolish 3,000 dangerous residential structures by the end of the year.
The goal is to reduce blight and eliminate potential hot spots for crime, according to the citys Web site. The city received $20 million in federal funds for demolition. Bing has called for the land where houses once stood to be converted to parks and farms.
Daniel Hurwitz-Goodman, a 16-year-old who lives with his parents in a home down the street from the Romneys former house, said the structure has been vacant for several years.
Its just sitting there, he said. Theres a big blue tarp over it. Theres stuff on the lawn. There was a Dumpster. A few of the windows are boarded up and the place is padlocked.
Development of the Palmer Woods neighborhood coincided with the rapid expansion of Detroits auto industry in the early 1900s, and industry executives built opulent homes there for their families, according to the communitys Web site.
Hurwitz-Goodman said the house sticks out in the otherwise manicured northwest Detroit neighborhood, replete with windy, tree- and foliage-lined streets.
It just looks dirty, he said. There are not other abandoned houses near it.
You would think that Mitt who was able to burden taxpayers with the federal Utah Hack Olympics 'Rescue', and his proposed 20 billion Detroit federal bailout during the Michigan GOP primaries, where McCain said to his credit that Detroit would have to reform itself, but Mitt offered to tax us to give to Detroit, you would figure Mr. Conservative himself, would propose another federal subsidy/bailout for his old, 'historic' home of the supposed first Mormon President.
It's kind of odd, like many things about Mittens. His religion is odd. He's an odd duck. He says he is a home boy of ....Massachusetts, California, New Hampshire, Utah( of course ), Michigan and who knows where else.
So, now his birthplace, is being erased. Facts, history changed. Remember how he just 'loved' Michigan, and it hurt him deeply to see what happened to Detroit, and by gosh darn it he was going to roll up his sleeves and fix Detroit like he fixed..um....but.but not his own birthplace. And what ever happened to that fix plan of his? It just seemed to have faded away..
Maybe George Romney was just a drifter grifter exploiter of Michigan as Mitt was to his "home" of Massachusetts( has he passed papers on his illegal gardener Belmont mansion yet?) And not that there is ever going to be a President Mitt, so maybe it is fitting that the physical erasure of this sad, grasping, thin man is taking place along with the ghost of his Presidential delusions.
I suppose if he did become President, the Mormon church could rebuild an exact replica of the log cabin he grew up in, complete with split rail fence and oil lamps he studied to get into Harvard with. In the back would be a garage where his father invented the Model T.
Gee, just alittle boased against Mitt?
I suppose you support Sarah Palin, who wildy endorses McPain?
Like anyone should give a sh!t.
Isn’t 5500 square feet a little small for a family of RINOs?
I don’t know about Leisler, but I sure support Sarah over Mitt any day of the week and twice on Sunday. All of the RINO elites like Romney, Graham, McConnell, McCain, and a host of others are going down in flames whether you support them or not because the bulk of Conservative Americans want the politics of the unusual over the politics of the usual.
My parents retired in '78 and moved to Lake Havasu, AZ. and to this day ... we kids think fondly of 16 Weld.
We've even taken a ride past when we visit the area (we're all kinda' spread over the country now)
"Hey .. 'member when ... ?"
With Mitt's money, clout and name ... that beautiful old house should never have fallen into disrepair in the first place.
(rabbit trail time ... )
I once met a plumber working next door in SW Pa, that I would vote for in a heart beat ... I even asked if he was running for anything.
Why?
He was about 60 years old at the time (1983/4), and working out of his first car .. a 1925 LaSalle.
Anyone that can keep something old running and obviously cherish that car SHOULD have the reins of the greatest nation on earth ... "built" over 200 years ago.
Romney is finished since he is now shown to NOT
be a natural American citizen.
NO WONDER THE ROMNEYBOTS HAVE PROTECTED OBAMA’S BC.
You’re NUTS!
Is that the Mormon evil eye?
Anyways, just from memory, we’d have to go back into the 1800’s to not be able to find a standing President’s birthplace. So, maybe, as you suggest it is some future time warp back to the past event where Mitt’s history, Karma like, is being erased.
Of course the join the Mormons, flee from England, then flee to Mexico, then flee back to the states and run for President Romney’s don’t have that stand and fight gene. Not one has ever fought for this country in uniform in nearly two hundred years. Which must be a record of some kind. And, like I said, the Energizer Bunny Mitt is always hopping around from liberal to conservative, California to New Hampshire.
Odd isn’t it?
It was claimed for back taxes. I guess 30k would pay the back taxes, repair the roof, clean the yard, secure the windows/doors.
You would think the Mormon Army would attack this future shrine. But, maybe they are done with Mitt too.
And before any of my fellow Mitten citizens asks me to ping the rest, I'll tell you I won't do it. I'm interested in knowing about the houses being torn down--where they are, where the money is coming from, is that money being used as effectively as possible...I don't run the Romney bashing thread. I don't care for the guy, but that's not the point. He's not the story.
/rant
And DeMint, Bachmamn and Paul, and my new fav of the week, NJ Governor Christ Christie.
As for Mitt, another limp, corporate, flip flopping, bunny hunting( once ) Harvard Lawyer weasel......eh...not so much. ( does it show? )
I think that’s George Romney’s boyhood home and not Mitt’s.
Romney's natural US citizenship is as real as .... his fake LEO badges.
I was fortunate enough in my early work years to have been trained by an old machinist that taught me such things as using a spoon (it's a tool), to scrape inner bearing races and rebuilding the bearings for macinery in a (are you ready for this?) cellophane company that made bags for bread.
This was in '67 or '68.
That factory was torn down sometime during the renovation of Boston ... but I remember meeting a lot of men that knew stuff about things that are now gone and forgotten.
No one copes gingerbread anymore.
