I picked a bad time to turn 50. While Obama is POTUS.

Here in America the 50+ folks are competing with illegals and recent college graduates for minimum wage jobs.

Umm...I think they, the researchers, have missed the real reason.
Up until age 50 most folks are caring for dependent children. In the decade after 50-years most will be clear of such dependentcy - a huge stress releaser.

Here in America the 50+ folks are competing with illegals and recent college graduates for minimum wage jobs.
It is my observation that in many large companies ( those with over 2,000 employees), when bad times hit, the older ones tend to go because their salaries are higher and the work they do could possibly be contracted out or taken over by someone 10 or 15 years younger.
In other words, more than racial or gender or orientation related discrimination, AGE DISCRIMINATION is rampant in this country and there seems to be little can be done about it.
Those who are in their 50's who get laid off are in a precarious position... at a time when the real jobless rate is 17%, you have to compete with lots of people like you, younger people who are willing to take the job for less pay, or shift to another career or even take the job for significantly less pay than you used to be paid.
You're too young to retire, yet people won't hire.
Yet, people in their 50's are supposed to be the happiest in times like these.
