Former First Lady Laura Bush has come out against the Arizona immigration law, pointing to the discrimination that her own Irish ancestors, named Welch, faced in their time.

In an interview with Fox News, Bush said the new law merely showed an upsurge in prejudice similar to what her Irish ancestors faced.

It is a disappointment, but spouses and children often differ in opinion from the person who is elected to office. At least she was gracious enough to keep quiet while her husband was president. W surely read this, and perhaps believed that she had a right to let off some steam and state what she believed after all the years she had to sit silently by his side. Personally, I think she should have kept a lot of this to herself for a while longer, and she should have given these statements more thought.

Ronald Reagan had to endure the embarrassment of his two youngest children, who did not agree with his views. At least his two older children respected his views and agreed with him.

Laura was a classy First Lady. I wish she could have left it at that. Sometimes silence is golden.

...because there is nothing at all different about a white European Irishman compared to a Mexican...

I never read or heard that Pat Nixon leaned to the left. I think I heard that daughter Julie voted for Obama, while Tricia is a staunch Republican.

Julie’s book about her mother was wonderful. Pat Nixon worked hard in her life - nothing was given to her. Great book.

Yes it is evil..but as evil does to people’s minds...it is masked in acceptance and kindness...too bad for her. Hope she wakes up but GW needs to get some balls in regards to her.

This is what I found on Wikipedia.
She spoke out in favor of women running for political office and encouraged her husband to nominate a woman to the Supreme Court, saying “woman power is unbeatable; I’ve seen it all across this country”.[46] She was the first of the American First Ladies to publicly support the Equal Rights Amendment,[47], though her views on abortion were mixed. Following the Court’s 1973 Roe vs. Wade decision, Pat stated she was pro-choice.[1] However in 1972, she said, “I’m really not for abortion. I think it’s a personal thing. I mean abortion on demand—wholesale.”[48]

In 1972, Pat became the first Republican First Lady to address a national convention.[1] Her efforts in the 1972 reelection campaign—traveling across the country and speaking on behalf of her husband—were copied by future wifes.
She had a stroke. Did not see any drinking problem.

Thanks for looking this up. She was a great lady, never heard of any drinking....I think she was a strong, stable force for her husband.

She was a wonderful First Lady, and represented our country with class and grace. President Nixon has said that her beauty was not only on the outside, she was beautiful within, also. He fell in love with her from the start.

Thanks again!

She’s gone native. This is what the gals in High Park, TX think. Butthe Bush women are both liberal. Barbara and Laura stayed “pro-choice” while their husbands became ‘pro-like.” The sad thing is that this posture seems to say”
“Well, they didn’t really mean all that stuff.” There are not many ardent pro-life people in our upper-crust.

Yes, thanks, and I saw the video the first time around, on television. She never says she is against the law. Too many pretentious people willing to pounce on a gracious, intelligent lady who has wept a lot of patriotic tears for this nation in humble service to the American people.

To paraphrase the Bible, people in the last days like Laura Bush will call evil good and good evil.

She probably should have waited until after the library was completely funded to publish that book.

Anyway, since there are many Bush fans here who no doubt want to help, I made a link for them.

In TX, there’s only one way to become a Democrat now if not already one: vote in the next party primary in March 2012. LWB may have a preference for 2012.
