telegraph.co.uk ^ | MAY 14, 2010 | James Quinn

Posted on 05/15/2010 7:13:20 PM PDT by Free ThinkerNY

The US has sent a team of nuclear physicists to help BP plug the "catastrophic" flow of oil into the Gulf of Mexico from its leaking Deepwater Horizon well, as the Obama administration becomes frustrated with the oil giant's inability to control the situation.

The five-man team – which includes a man who helped develop the first hydrogen bomb in the 1950s – is the brainchild of Steven Chu, President Obama's Energy Secretary.

He has charged the men with finding solutions to stop the flow of oil.

President Obama yesterday promised a "relentless" effort to resolve the problem as he criticised the "cozy relationship" BP and other oil companies have with US regulators in Washington.

He also denounced the attempts by executives from BP, Transocean and Haliburtion to blame each other during this week's congressional hearings into the rig disaster. "I will not tolerate more finger pointing or irresponsibility." Mr Obama said.

The five scientists visited BP's main crisis centre in Houston earlier this week, along with Mr Chu, and are to continue to work with the company's scientists and external advisers to reach an answer.

In an interview with The Daily Telegraph, Mr Hayward said the five-hour meeting involved a "very deep dive" into the situation at hand, with "lots of nuclear physicists and all sorts of people coming up with some quite good ideas actually."

Pressed further about the meeting, he said they had "come up with one good idea" but declined to elaborate.

The five include 82-year-old Richard Garwin, who designed the first hydrogen bomb, and Tom Hunter, head of the US Department of Energy's Sandia National Labs.

A gynecologist had become fed up with malpractice insurance and HMO
paperwork, and was burned out. Hoping to try another career where
skillful hands would be beneficial, he decided to become a mechanic. He
went to the local technical college, signed up for evening classes,
attended diligently, and learned all he could. When the time of the
practical exam approached, the gynecologist prepared carefully for weeks
and completed the exam with tremendous skill.

When the results came back, he was surprised to find that he had
obtained a score of 150%. Fearing an error, he called the Instructor,
saying, “I don’t want to appear ungrateful for such an outstanding
result, but I wonder if there is an error in the grade?”

The instructor said, “During the exam, you took the engine apart
perfectly, which was worth 50% of the total mark. You put the engine
back together again perfectly, which is also worth 50% of the mark.”
After a pause, the instructor added, “I gave you an extra 50% because
you did it all through the muffler, which I’ve never seen done in my
entire career”.

I would tell Obozo to go “suck an egg”.

I see how this is shaping up now.
The leak is about to be fixed by BP and the teams working on it, but Obozo has to ride in on his black horse, along with some pointy headed nuke scientist, so that he can claim that he has saved the world.

It actually does make sense, if all the other "top hat" and "top kill" and "plug it up with golf balls" schemes don't pan out.

A small tactical nuke will fracture the sea floor, melt much of it into glass, seal the well and it's perfectly tamped by a mile of water.

What are they afraid of, glowing jellyfish? They're already glowing at that depth.

When I first heard this idea of nuking the leak a couple of weeks ago here on FR I thought it sounded kind of crazy.
After thinking about it and watching everything else fail I’m starting to wonder if it might work, I’m pretty sure that we have nukes much smaller than what most people normally think of when you say NUKE IT.
Small “suitcase” or tactical type things, It is 50 mi. out and a mile down after all, I guess the question would be what will cause the least damage.

I can picture the clowns in the administration all sitting around the table while zero pounds the table screaming "i want the smartest people on the planet on this YESTERDAY"... And so the energy sec rounds up some nuke scientists to fix hole in the ocean floor.

What happens when an underwater volcano erupts and orders of magnitude more oil shoots out of the earth? What will zero do then?

Another thing... I thought all this oil was supposed to be from "fossil fuels"? LOL there is no way all this oil came from dinosaurs.

One more thing... Why doesn't our president get up there and explain why he's the largest campaign recipient of bp dollars, and why they got a waiver to submit certain paperwork, and why they had no plan in the first place. The president talks all this shitake about how he won't tolerate finger pointing blah blah he needs to figure out how to look at himself and his own administration. You can boil down everything I just said into this one word "FUBO"

I've been thinking of this too. Small nuclear device, the immense heat melts the sand bottom and seals the leak. Plus if things go wrong and it just blows a bigger hole, the administration gets the blame. The optimal win-win scenario.
