Opponent claims Catholic candidate, father of six, too busy for office

by Thomas Peters on May 13th, 2010

Can a Catholic father of six handle the responsibilities of public office?

Ms. Buchanan, who is competing with Keith Rothfus in Pennsylvania-4’s GOP primary next Tuesday, doesn’t think so. Daron Christopher writes:

With little to distinguish her on issues or experince with her opponent, lawyer Keith Rothfus, [Mary Beth Buchanan] has settled on making the case that he has too many children to serve effectively in Congress. From Sunday’s Post-Gazette:

The married mother of a grown daughter had another message for the married father of six, whose youngest child is 3: “I’m running full time for this position and I will be able to devote my full time to it, as I do not have other responsibilities — as my primary opponent should be concerned about,” she said.

This neatly raises the question of whether you'd want someone with her view of the world representing you at all—half-time or full-time.

Rothfus and I have been friends for 25 years. One day, I said to his future wife, “So. When are you and Keith getting married?” Her response was that the thought had never crossed her mind. She meant it.

This attack is going to go over like a lead balloon—at least with pro-lifers!

I don’t think he’ll have any problem. Handling a family of 6 is good preparation, and it looks like he’ll have plenty of help. Silly woman! (the Buchanan babe)

Mary Beth Buchanan sounds like a Democrat. That is, defining what's right or wrong for another person.

Here's how it works in most large Catholic families: The older kids help out their parents with the younger children.

You go, Keith Rothfus !!!

I hope he wins!!!

I’m afraid though she was speaking over his head to women who will connect with the notion of children who suffer from lack of attention from busy overworked fathers. It’s the same segment of women, who while personally moral and conservative, had issues with voting for McCain/Palin because they saw her as needing to take care of her new Downs baby.

I hope I’m wrong, but I’m afraid his campaign is doomed. These women I’m speaking of will make up just enough a difference to cause him to lose!

It would seem that Ms. Buchanan is missing several marbles. Who would even vote for such a silly twit?

My wife and I raised nine children. At various times, we both worked. People would ask us how we could raise nine kids. I usually answered this way:

It’s actually quite easy. With one child, you spoil him/her. With two, the odds are even. With three, you are outnumbered. Four or more, they help or they don’t eat. Hunger is a powerful motivator.

Next question?

Mary is obviously the authority on this subject. /SAR

Meet Mary Beth
http://www.marybethbuchanan.org/meet.jsp
When she was 16 she made a bad decision and became pregnant.

She relied on her extended family and her faith, and without a mother to guide her, at 17 she became a mom herself to her wonderful daughter Jennifer.

Today she uses her personal experience to counsel young women facing this decision, sharing with them her faith and inspiring them to have their children.

The challenges continued for Mary Beth and her young daughter when Jennifer’s father dropped from the picture. Without child support, Mary Beth completed high school, worked her way through California University of Pennsylvania and then she and Jennifer went off to law school at Pitt.
