I think WND is just mad that their story doesn’t come up first in the Google search. Yahoo/Goodsearch & Google return similar results for “Obama+social+security+number” or “Obama+social+security+number+connecticut”.

Alta Vista

Recently I was reading some article on web past history. The author started it off with "Back in the days when AltaVista was the coolest search engine ..." or words to that effect.

I used to use them back when their hostname was still altavista.digital.com, and they used 64-bit DEC Alpha-powered servers. And they were head and shoulders above Yahoo, Lycos, WebCrawler and the rest of the pack. Then I heard about Google. Smaller index (it was still in beta at the time). Way fewer query tweaks available. Damn good results, though. You didn't really need the tweaks. It took about a week before I stopped using AltaVista.

Nowadays, all the search engines, including AltaVista, seem to use some version of Google's page-rank algorithm. So, you seem get reasonable results from most of them.
